Continuing our focus on Qubee and Afan-Oromo (i.e. the Oromo language) as the adoption of Qubee (the Afan-Oromo alphabet) marks its 23rd year on November 3, 2014 …
It had taken countless sacrifices by the Oromo Nation to develop its national language, which had been (and continues to be) targeted by successive Abyssinian regimes occupying Oromia since the conquest of Oromia by Menelik in the late 19th century. Today, the Abyssinian regime occupying Oromia – the Tigrean TPLF, works to wipe out the Afan-Oromo through indirect means, such as denying Afan-Oromo the status of the Federal Working Language, thus through making Afan-Oromo undesirable for the Oromo youth to know and study it. Oftentimes, a job candidate reveals that they’re denied jobs at the Federal level just “#BecauseIAmOromo,” i.e. just because one only speaks Afan-Oromo fluently, the most widely spoken language in Ethiopia, rather, candidates with Amharic fluency get the jobs (thus leading to the discriminatory hiring practices based on nationality in Oromia itself). Imagine that in England, the Federal/Central-Govt Working Language becomes Deutsch/German language, and Englishmen and Englishwomen (who have been taught in schools in the English language) are required to know Deutsch to work at London’s federal (i.e. central government) institutions. That’s the injustice now millions of Oromo youth face in the TPLF-controlled Oromia.
To undo the linguistic tyranny in Ethiopia, countless Oromos worked day and night (and sacrifices their lives) to finally unban it in 1991, only 23 years ago. The unbanning of Afan-Oromo for official uses in Oromia came following the toppling of the Amhara-Abyssinian regime of Derg in May 1991. Even after its unbanning, in the now TPLF-controlled Oromia, the linguistic tyranny against Oromos continues and fuels the discriminatory hiring practices described above.

Thousands of Ethiopians tortured by brutal government security forces… while Britain hands over almost £1 BILLION in aid money
- Amnesty International says 5,000 people tortured, raped and ‘disappeared’
- Over the last three years the UK Government has given Ethiopia £1 billion
- It pocketed £261.5 million in 2012 and £284.4 million in 2013
October 29, 2014 (The Daily Mail) — More than £1billion from taxpayers was given in aid to Ethiopia while its security forces tortured, killed and raped, campaigners claimed yesterday.
Amnesty International has documented thousands of shockingly brutal abuses against citizens suspected of political opposition.
The human rights group’s report follows calls for greater scrutiny by Britain and other donors to ensure their money does not support state-sanctioned killings and brutality.
Amnesty warned that thousands have faced repeated torture while unlawful state killings have been carried out in a ‘relentless crackdown on real or imagined dissent’.
Horrors inflicted on ordinary Ethiopians include women being gang-raped and tortured by prison guards. Amnesty’s report also tells how a teacher was stabbed in the eye with a bayonet after refusing to teach pro-government propaganda to his students.
Entire families were arrested with parents and siblings ‘disappearing’ after they were taken to army camps, said Amnesty.
Britain has donated more than £1billion to Ethiopia in the last five years alone. The Government has denied funding security forces in the autocratic one-party state.
But Britain’s relationship with the East African country is likely to come under scrutiny in a judicial review into claims made by a Ethiopian farmer.
He has been given legal aid in this country to pursue allegations that UK aid supported the regime while it forced thousands of villagers like him from their land using murder, torture and rape.
Ethiopia remains one of the world’s poorest countries following decades of drought and famine, suffering highlighted by the 1984 Band Aid fundraising appeal.
The West has been accused of turning a blind eye to human rights abuse and effectively propping up the regime because of its support for the so-called war on terror.
Ethiopia has given support to combat radical groups such as Al Qaeda in the Horn of Africa and Al Shabaab in neighbouring Somalia. Last year, an independent analysis accused countries giving aid of not stopping the hardline Addis Ababa regime from abusing its citizens.
It said donors had ‘failed to take decisive action to prevent policies that deny the basic human rights of some of the poorest and most marginalised people of Ethiopia’.
The US report went on: ‘Donor organisations have failed to hold the Ethiopian government to standards of human and political rights, a neglect principally illustrated by the accounts of the forced relocations of entire communities in the name of development.
It should be no surprise that unchecked assistance to a hegemonic political party gets diverted to efforts to maintain political control,’ it added.
International Development Secretary Justine Greening is under pressure to investigate allegations that major recipients of British aid are guilty of torture state-sanctioned murder
The Oakland Institute, of California, added that the Department for International Development was the third biggest donor to the country after the US and the World Bank.
Questions have been raised over the value of some of the projects funded by the DfID in Ethiopia.
Last year, the Daily Mail told how £4million of taxpayers’ money paid for an Ethiopian version of the Spice Girls to spread a message of empowerment to women.
The DfID denies that aid money is used to force people from their homes or to fund security forces.
A spokesman said Britain gave £261.5million to Ethiopia last year. This was used to provide clean drinking water for more than 250,000 people, send 1.6million children to primary school and ensure 110,000 mothers gave birth safely.
‘Not a penny goes to Ethiopia’s police or security sector,’ he said. ‘We work with independent agencies like Unicef to make the security and justice sector fairer and more accountable, eg helping women and girls get better access to justice.
‘The UK provides targeted funding for health, education and sanitation, not to the central Ethiopian treasury. We have robust legal and accounting checks to ensure UK aid is spent where it is intended.
‘We regularly raise human rights with the relevant authorities, including at the highest level of the government.’
A spokesman for the regime ‘categorically denied’ Amnesty International’s claims. Redwan Hussein also accused the campaigners of being ‘hellbent on tarnishing Ethiopia’s image again and again’.
‘They put hot coals on us. We screamed as our clothes melted’
Harrowing accounts of rape and brutality were highlighted by Amnesty International.
In one case, three teenage girls arrested with their parents were tortured with hot coals by soldiers at a military camp where they were held for years.
One sister, named only as Nooria, said the soldiers came to her family’s home when she was 14 or 15, after her father was arrested on suspicion of political dissent.
She said she was interrogated and beaten, and still carried horrific physical scars from when she and her sisters were burned.
‘Two soldiers did this to me. They came into the room, tied up our hands and made us lie down on our backs. They put hot coals on my stomach. They didn’t just burn me; they also burned my two sisters.
‘Our clothes melted on us. We screamed but the soldiers didn’t care, they’re accustomed to screaming.’
Nooria was later released with one of her sisters but has not seen her parents or eldest sister since.
Other detainees told the campaigners how molten plastic was poured onto their legs. There were also shocking accounts of captors cutting off the ears and fingers of prisoners.
A 33-year-old woman told Amnesty she was detained without charge for nine months in a military camp.
‘I was thoroughly beaten,’ she said. ‘I cried for help saying that I was not guilty and should not be killed.
‘One night, three men came to my cell and said that I was being taken for interrogating but they just took me to a room and raped me.
‘After that, they just threw me back into the cell. I was not the only one –they would do the same to the other women there.’
A second woman said: ‘I was raped by three men – one after the other. I remember them very clearly and can identify them. Rape happened several times. This was not unique to me, the other women in the cell had the same experience.’
A midwife said he was beaten and punished after delivering the baby of the wife of a member of the banned Oromo Liberation Front.
A university student told how he was arrested at gunpoint after winning a competition to produce a business plan because security forces said it was political.
The student was beaten, starved and endured months of interrogation, including a mock execution.e

STATEMENTS ON PLIGHT OF OROMO REFUGEE COMMUNITY IN CAIRO
October 29, 2014
Today on 28th October 2014, the Oromo community in Egypt protested in front of UNHCR office to denounce in response to the Ethiopian community allegation during the protest on 19th October 2014, supported by the Ethiopian Embassy in Egypt, to denigrates Oromo refugees in Cairo. On behalf of Oromo Refugees Community in Cairo, we want to express our serious concerns with the treatment of our community by the Ethiopian government allied Ethiopian community in Egypt.
As it is well known, Oromos have been oppressed in the Horn of Africa region over the past 120 years. Oromos still strive to save their lives in many ways, and often escape from Ethiopia, eventually crossing many borders until they find a peaceful place to definitely settle.
We, the Oromo community in Cairo in exile, would humbly forward our letter of complaints to your honored office concerning the above matter hoping for a timely intervention.
The Oromo people constitute 40% of Ethiopian population and have undergone successive oppression in the hand of present and past regimes through all sort of tortures which succumbed us to leave our beloved country ‘Oromia’ and made us scattered all over the world. The TPLF government sees Oromos as threats to its political power. For this reason, the TPLF government is intent on weakening the human, economic, and intellectual capacities of the Oromo people in and outside Ethiopia through political killings, intimidation, abductions and disappearances, unlawful imprisonments and torture against the Oromo people. This has been going on for over two decades.
To escape from such gross human rights violations, many Oromo refugees have been forced to flee from their homeland and are dispersed all over Africa, especially to Egypt through difficult journey and route to save their lives. Oromo refugees in Egypt are experiencing a multitude of human rights violations, including violent attacks by Ethiopian agents and attempts of political assassinations and intimidation targeted by the Ethiopian Embassy in Cairo through its extension of the Ethiopian community.
FEARS AND CONCERNS
The numbers of Oromo refugees in the Republic of Egypt are increasing day by day, and about 1000-1500 people refugees and asylum seekers have already registered at UNHCR, the current political situations in Ethiopia are not pleasing. When they reach Cairo, Oromos were subjected to harassment from agents of the Ethiopian Government and the Ethiopian Embassy in Cairo and the community allied to it i.e. the Ethiopia Community.
In a recent development, the Ethiopian community backed by the Ethiopian Embassy in Cairo to discredit Oromo refugees in Cairo and continuously distributed leaflets and other oppressive propaganda to all international media, such as the Amhara TV called ESAT and other medias outlets, which distort the reputation of our Oromo community by terming Oromo community in Cairo as “Islamic minority and terrorists.” The latest protests organized on 19/10/2014 by the Amhara community in front of the Office of the High Commissioner for refugees in Cairo were evident.
Through the aforementioned, it becomes evident that Oromos suffer in different ways in both, their homeland and their exile. For the above reason, we organize peaceful protests to condemn these practices and seek for national and international protection.
Resolutions and appeals
We are convinced that any positive exit in all these issues will help drastically improve Egypt-based Oromo refugees’ life standards and personal conditions. We count on you, your understanding and commitment, being sure that you will not let us down.

Resolutions and appeals
- We condemn the Ethiopian community act of oppressing us backed by the Ethiopian authority
- Oromo people have common political problem, and not religious problems. This claim of using religious issues to get sympathy from resettlement countries and marginalize oromo refugees, both Christian and Muslims, we want to show the world that the Oromo people are united – and we have three religion, Muslims, Christian and Waqefata. We know too well that a religion is for God, and our nation homeland Oromia for all and we, therefore, uphold our national unity irrespective of the religion of the Oromo belong to.
- We condemn the Ethiopian Embassy hand in Oromo internal refugees affairs and condemn the Ethiopian Government to stop intimidating our community.
- We appeal to the UNHCR to be proactive and make efforts to pressure the Egyptian government to protect Oromo refugees in Egypt – whose lives are threatened by Ethiopian agents, ensure that Oromo refugees human rights are respected and release Oromo refugees who were in Egyptian detentions to be released, ensure that they not forced to deportation to danger in home country.
- Call upon the Office of the High Commissioner for refugees in Cairo refugee to give attention to the protection of Oromo refugee members, leaders and activist who were targeted by regime in Egypt. Make sure to give appropriate security and safety of our members who escaped the junta of the Ethiopian regime and those who were wanted by regime and possible resettlement in a third country.
- Condemn the killing and disappearance of Oromo students in Ethiopia, murder and imprisonment of Oromo students in Ethiopian universities who were demonstrating a peaceful demonstration to protest the land grabbers and against expansion of capital Addis Ababa.
- We appeal to UNHCR to understand this grave situation of Oromo claimants and make sure that when rendering protection and humanitarian services to Oromo in exile, consider that the undeserved people will not be favored. Those people who have two identities, secured by Ethiopian government and exit the country at there own will and return. Also had UNHCR documents. This type of injustice is happening while the oppressed Oromo refugees are suffering for long time waiting for services. To our deep disbelieve we Oromos in Cairo are experiencing total discrimination if this culprit have not been uprooted. We appeal to your office to investigate all Oromo claimants matter and solve it amicably so that justice in front of your eye is halted immediately. We therefore request your esteemed humanitarian body to attentively handle our grievance so that the oppressed community at home cannot be made to suffer again at the hand of same aggressors.
- Lastly we need to remind UNHCR something concerning the Oromo language, it is historically known that any communities, tribes, in the world ignorant of his mother tongue and that are natural according to the law of God. Language as the core of identity of one tribe that express ones culture and heritage. For this purpose we clearly disagree with those culprits who identify themselves as Oromos and yet they are Oromo antagonist. Is it logic that one whose mothers and fathers native language is known and yet they don’t speak??? Reality is not hidden if not ignored. We assure your office that whosoever is from one race or tribe in Africa even if he is born in Hong Kong China, he speaks his mother tongue and that is his identity! What about those who grew up in their mother land and yet don’t know their language??? The huge problem is the problem of Oromo case / claimant which hinders our community. Some unnamed communities used to forge cases or get information to attain their goals using Oromo claims while they don’t belong to us. Through memorizing false cases .it is historically evident for such people hypocritically used Oromo names to achieve their goals. Reality they are agents of Ethiopian authority to destabilize Oromo refugees in diaspora. Refugees just because of their identity, language, culture. It unlawful to use false identity and claim and we request your kind office to review the Oromo problem.
We are convinced that any positive exit in all these issues will help drastically improve Egypt-based Oromo refugees’ life standards and personal conditions. We count on you, your understanding and commitment, being sure that you will not let us down.

Amnesty: Ethiopia Systematically Repressing Oromo
October 28, 2014, ADDIS ABABA(VOA News) — Amnesty International has issued anew report claiming that the Ethiopian government is systematically repressing the country’s largest ethnic group, the Oromo.
Amnesty says the Oromo are subject to arbitrary arrest, detentions without access to lawyers, repeated torture and even targeted killings as part of the state’s efforts to crush dissident.
Claire Beston, the Ethiopia researcher for Amnesty International, said the East African country is hostile to any kind of dissent but particularly fears the Oromo for a number of reasons.
“[Reasons include] the numerical size of the Oromo because they’re the largest ethnic group; a strong sense of national identity amongst the Oromo; and also kind of [a] history of perceived anti-government sentiment,” said Beston.
Oromia is the largest state within Ethiopia. About 35% of the population is considered to be ethnically Oromo.
Oromo students protested in April and May against the capital city’s restructuring plan – which they said would dilute Oromo culture through annexing traditional Oromo land surrounding Addis Ababa. The rare protests led to violence. Several dozen people were killed and hundreds arrested. Peaceful Oromo Muslim protests in 2012 and 2013 were also crushed with force and mass arrests.
Beston said Oromo students and protestors are not the only ones who are at risk in Ethiopia.
“We’re talking about hundreds of people from ordinary people from all walks of life including teachers and mid-wives, and even government employees, singers and a range of other professions who’re all arrested just on the suspicion that they don’t support the government,” said Beston.
Amnesty International has not been allowed into Ethiopia since 2011. Researchers based the report’s findings on several hundred interviews with Oromo refugees outside Ethiopia and telephone and email conversations with Oromo inside the country. Many of the respondents said they had been detained in prisons, police stations, military camps or unofficial detention centers where they were subjected to repeated torture.
Amnesty has concluded at least 5,000 Oromo have been arrested and detained since 2011, many for weeks or months without being charged. The report said they are usually accused of supporting or being members of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), an outlawed armed group. The OLF has been fighting for self-determination for more than 40 years. The report claims this is just a pretext for silencing dissent.
In response to Amnesty, the government – through the state-run Oromia Justice Bureau – said there is no clear evidence of violations as claimed by Amnesty and called the allegations “untrue and far from the reality.”
Beston said repression throughout the country, and particularly against the Oromo, is likely to increase as the May 2015 elections approach.

Ethiopia ‘ruthlessly targeting’ and torturing Oromo people, says Amnesty
Damning report says thousands of people from country’s largest ethnic group are subjected to abuse including rape and killingsOctober 28, 2014 (The Guardian) — Ethiopia has “ruthlessly targeted” and tortured its largest ethnic group owing to a perceived opposition to the government, Amnesty International has said.
Thousands of people from the Oromo ethnic group have been “regularly subjected to arbitrary arrest, prolonged detention without charge, enforced disappearance, repeated torture and unlawful state killings,” according to a damning report based on more than 200 testimonies. “Dozens of actual or suspected dissenters have been killed.”
At least 5,000 Oromos have been arrested since 2011 often for the “most tenuous of reasons”, for their opposition – real or simply assumed – to the government, the report added.
Many are accused of supporting the rebel Oromo Liberation Front (OLF).
Former detainees who have fled the country and were interviewed by Amnesty in neighbouring Kenya, Somaliland and Uganda described torture “including beatings, electric shocks, mock execution, burning with heated metal or molten plastic and rape, including gang-rape”, the report added.
One young girl said hot coals had been dropped on her stomach because her father was suspected of supporting the OLF, while a teacher described how he was stabbed in the eye with a bayonet after he refused to teach “propaganda about the ruling party” to students.
There was no immediate response from the government, which has previously dismissed such reports and denied any accusation of torture or arbitrary arrests.
“The Ethiopian government’s relentless crackdown on real or imagined dissent among the Oromo is sweeping in its scale and often shocking in its brutality,” the Amnesty researcher Claire Beston said.
“This is apparently intended to warn, control or silence all signs of ‘political disobedience’ in the region,” she added, describing how those she interviewed bore the signs of torture, including scars and burns, as well as missing fingers, ears and teeth.
With nearly 27 million people, Oromia is the most populated of the country’s federal states and has its own language, Oromo, which is distinct from Ethiopia’s official Amharic language.
Some of those who spoke to Amnesty said people had been arrested for organising a student cultural group. Another said she was arrested because she delivered the baby of the wife of a suspected OLF member.
“Frequently, it’s because they refused to join the ruling party,” Beston added, warning that many were fearful attacks would increase before general elections slated for May 2015.
In April and May, security forces shot dead student protesters in Oromia. At the time, the government said eight had been killed, but groups including Human Rights Watch said the toll was believed to be far higher. Amnesty said “dozens” had been killed in the protests.

2014 Harmaaf Harka Mura Aanolee and Cali Calanqoo Remembrance Day – Ottawa, Canada
Said Abdosh | October 27, 2014
On October 11, 2014, the Oromo-Canadian community of Ottawa held its first annual commemoration event of Harmaa fi Harka Muraa Aanolee and Cali Calanqoo Remembrance Day. Those attending the memorial stood together, as a symbol of unity, and observed a minute of silence in remembering the sheer scale of genocide committed against the Oromo people during the time of colonization, in which millions of the Oromo population was massacred. In his opening remarks, Bakkalcha Abdosh, Chairman of the community, reiterated that it’s a solemn duty of every Oromo to commemorate Harmaa fi Harka Muraa Aanolee, Cali Calanqoo and other massacres to ensure that the sufferings of our people and their memories are never lost.
Bakkalcha called upon all diaspora Oromo Communities to memorialize or commemorate these events, each year, in order to pay tribute to the courage of the Oromo people in that time of gravest peril. Moreover, he emphasized the need to provide vivid accounts of Harmaaf Harka Muraa Aanolee, Cali Calanqoo and other genocides perpetrated against our people in order to teach current and generations to come so that the memories of those innocent Oromo men, women and children massacred at the hands of the Abyssinians as well as the brutality, cruelty, savagery and inhumanness of Menelik and his successors are never forgotten.
Finally, Bakkalcha passionately argued that Oromos use such commemoration events as a source of passion, unity, solidarity and creative fire to light the Oromumma flame in each and every Oromo soul in order to rededicate and re-strengthen our resolve to free ourselves from the colonial yoke, once and for all.
The Ottawa community was blessed to have the calibre of Professor Abbas Hajii Gnamo as the keynote speaker for the commemoration. Professor Abbas started his presentation with a quote from Ernest Renan, 1882, who associates nationhood with collective memory of the sacrifices of the past, the solidary of the present generation and common aspiration of the future:
“A nation is a soul, a spiritual principle… A nation is a great solidarity, created by the sentiment of the sacrifices which have been made and of those which one is disposed to make in the future. It presupposes a past; but it resumes itself in the present by a tangible fact: the consent, the clearly expressed desire to continue life in common.”
Professor Abbas provided a well articulated historical context of Menelik’s war of conquest including the proximate and immediate economic, political and strategic factors. He gave accounts of a series of confrontations and major battlefields which culminated in genocidal massacres and mutilations: “Harmaafi Harka Mura Aanolee and Cali Calanqoo” in 1886-1887. He eloquently furnished thorough narratives of genocidal campaign launched by Menelik and provided comprehensive accounts of the battles of Azule, Aanolee and Cali Calanqoo. Professor Abbas persuasively argued that Oromos must remember and never forget the millions of Oromo lives that were attacked, tortured, mutilated, enslaved and destroyed by Menelik and his army generals during the most heinous chapter in Oromo history. In addition to the physical and psychological impact of the colonization on the Oromo society, he briefly mentioned the long term consequences including the end of sovereign existence and total exclusion from the political power, the destruction of Gadaa, Oromo democratic socio-political system, an embodiment of civilizational model and identity, the ban of Muudaa and Caffee Institutions, the alienation of land and the consequent serfdom.
As well, Professor Abbas paid a moving tribute to the courage of the Oromo gallant warriors in general, and the leaders of this long and protracted resistance in particular. He singled out Leenjiso Diigaa, the emblematic commander of the Arsi coalitions, and who defeated Menelik’s army many times over, as well as other reputed heroes such as Jaatanee Bultum and his two sons (Nagawo and Seera), Qal’ie Tongo and Ereeso Tongo and Godaana Garicho, etc. He also gave accounts of Albaso and Chilalo women warriors fighting along with men at the height of this war, 1886.
Furthermore, Professor Abbas echoed the famous words: “without memory, there is no culture. Without memory, there would be no civilization, no society, no future.”
Additionally, Professor Abbas observed the following two important lessons for current and future Oromo nationalists:
The lesson from Aanolee and Calanqoo is that freedom has no price – they took a risk of standing their ground instead of trading their dignity, land and freedom to have imperial peace. They preferred death and mutilation instead of peaceful surrender to be imperial slaves and gabbars. They lost their freedom but not without a fight and their legacy and sacrifices continue to inspire their descendants and generations of freedom fighters.
The second important lesson is unity. The Arsi resisted for so long, won many rounds of battles and even inflicted heavy causalities on the invaders because they were united and cohesive. When and where the Oromo were divided they became easy prey for their enemies. The activists and nationalists of today may not expect any positive result if they fail to unite this vast and proud nation to see the end of oppression and alienation.
As well, Professor Abbas commended the Aanolee and Calanqoo Remembrance Day was an important stage in the long process of struggling with genocide phenomenon and a significant one for creating social awareness on the issue. In this regard, he echoed Bakkalcha’s solemn call for annual commemoration of Aanolee, Calanqoo and others in order to ensure that the genocides and the lessons are never forgotten.
Finally, Professor Abbas concluded his presentation by thanking the Oromo community of Ottawa for their efforts in ensuring that the Aanoole, Calanqoo, Wallo, Gullellle, Galan and other genocides continue to have permanent place in our nations’ collective consciousness.

Nov. 3, 2014 – Hamar, Norway: Call for the Commemoration of the 2005 FDG; And Rally Against Human Rights Violations and Land-Grabbing in Oromia
Posted: Onkoloolessa/October 27, 2014 · Finfinne Tribune | Gadaa.com | Comments off
We protest against the ongoing human rights violations, inhuman killings, and the repression carried out by the criminal Ethiopian government.
The objective of the protest is to condemn the current unlawful and inhuman acts of the TPLF/EPRDF government against Oromos, and to call on the U.S. and the EU, and the Norway government in particular, to stop their relationship with the Ethiopian dictatorial regime; to review their strategy towards the oppressive brutal regime; instead to support the genuine struggle of the Oromo and other people’s for freedom and equality which could serve for lasting peace in the Horn African region; to act on behalf of justice for the sufferings of Oromos; and to put the necessary pressure on the Ethiopian government to release all political prisoners, of which the overwhelming majority is the Oromo.
We know that Mr. Bekele Gerba, the Oromo prisoner of conscience and former lecturer at the Addis Ababa University – who was thrown into prison on August 27, 2011, by the TPLF regime – is still suffering with poor health, and his life is in danger due to lack and denial of medical care in Qaallittii prison. While we are living abroad where human rights are protected, we must voice our protest against the TPLF killer machines and brutal killings. International human rights organizations have extensively documented the tortures, disappearances, extrajudicial killings of Oromo activists and lists of extensive chilling crimes against the politically oppressed Oromo people. With an estimated 25,000 Oromo political prisoners in official and secret prisons – simply because of their nationality and their resistance to injustice, it has been reported that Ethiopia’s overcrowded prisons speak the Oromo language. However, despite its well-documented dismal record on human rights, Ethiopia, a key western ally in the Horn of Africa, is being fueled by the $3-billion it receives annually from the EU and the United States, as reported by Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Amnesty International (AI). While all of these violations are being committed against the Oromo humanity, it is completely unfair to keep silent and watch the injustices.
Nothing will change unless we stand united against TPLF’s inhuman actions, torturings and imprisonments. WE ARE THE VOICE OF VOICELESS OROMOS.

Celebrate Qubee & Afan Oromo: 23 Years of Success Since the Nov. 3, 1991 Adoption of Qubee
October 26, 2014 (Gadaa.com) — As November 3 (Qubee Day) is fast approaching, it’s important to celebrate and understand the significance of November 3, 1991 – the day Qubee was adopted as the alphabet of Afan Oromo, after being endorsed by Oromo as well as other international linguists. With Qubee, Afan Oromo, the language so many fought and died to keep alive and legal, was sprung into its current revival period.
Afan Oromo is Africa’s fourth most widely “spoken” language, and since the November 3, 1991 adoption of Qubee, it’s also becoming one of the top “written” languages in Africa.
The history of Oromo shows that the Abyssinian successive ruling classes, emboldened by ignorance and arrogance, had the mission to wipe out this language; and their mission failed by the relentless national struggle of many Oromo generations before 1991 and after 1991.
When November comes, we are also reminded of the sacrifices paid by the Oromo youth during the 2005 FDG, which broke out on November 9, 2005 to fight against the subjugation of the Oromo people by the Tigrean TPLF regime.
The sacrifices of the Oromo youth have been seared into the Nation’s memory forever. Kabada Badhassa, Jagama Badhane, Alemayehu Garba, Gaddisa Hirphasaa, Morkata Idosa, Gemechu Benesa Bula, Lelisa Waqgari Bula, Yaasiin Muhaammad, Dirribee Jifaar, Simee Tarrafaa, Shibbiruu Damisee and many many others – died for Oromo’s national liberation and national pride, and to uphold Oromo’s national heritage, such as Qubee, the Gadaa System, Aaddaa Oromoo, to mention just a few of the Oromo national heritage.

Group Identifying Itself as OLF-Change EC Says, B/ Gen. Kemal Gelchu Has Been Removed from His Chairmanship
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FROM OROMO LIBERATION FRONT (OLF)
The Oromo Liberation Front (Popularly known as OLF for change) chairman, Brigadier General Kamal Galchuu has been removed from his position effective immediately.
Kamal Galchu since he came to the helm of the OLF, he has caused great destruction to the functions of the organization as a result of his poor leadership qualities and dictatorial actions.
On numerous occasions he has been counseled to change his controlling and tyrannical behaviors in order to uphold the organization’s bylaws. In addition, he was continuously counseled to focus on the main objectives of the OLF, which is to unite the Oromo people and lead a unified struggle against tyrannical rule in Ethiopia. Unfortunately, he has resisted any initiative to bring different Oromo political organizations to form unit against the Wayyane regime. His irresponsible and tyrannical actions has deterred (OLF Change) from creating a relationship and cooperation between other Oromo Political groups. As chairman, G/ Kamal Galchu has led our organization on the path of political and material corruption by further annihilating the organization from implementing positive changes that serve the interests of the Oromo people as a whole.
G/ Kamal Galchu has violated the laws he initially took an oath to uphold to serve his personal benefits and spread false propaganda among members of the organization, making it difficult to implement effective change. There is no a greater betrayal and shame than one who compromises a national struggle for personal benefits, the leadership of General Kamal Galchu displays an outright violation similar of that of tyrannical leaders in Ethiopia. He ran the organization on the platform of absolute tyranny, led by one man and for one man only, by creating an environment that made it difficult, if not impossible, for members to work towards the organization’s goals. This was prevalent when he chose not to abide by the rules of the organization and pushed for deleterious aims in order to advance his personal gains.
His actions led the organizations on a detrimental path and made it difficult for our objectives to become a reality. Essentially, his tyrannical motives have brought great havoc to everyone in the organization and the broader national struggle of the Oromo people. He displayed oppressive and authoritative behaviors of his former boss Meles Zenawi, whilst enhancing his personal motives at the expense of the cause. He uses divide and rule system of the Wayyane regime that has applied against our people in similar in its context within the organization.
The Oromo Liberation Front, in particular, and the Oromo people in general, do not have any more tolerance for such tyrannical behaviors, which is contrary to the egalitarian Gadaa democracy, which our ancestors gave to our people. The Oromo people have sacrificed the ultimate sacrifice to establish a source of true democracy, rule of law and human rights for all. We certainly cannot allow any tyrannical and self-interested leaders to keep the Oromo people from attaining their freedom. His actions are blatantly shameful, instead of listening to the council and advice of many leaders and elders, Oromo elites and think thank within the organization at different levels; he disregarded his duties and responsibilities by continuously violating our constitution that mandate collective leadership. By violating the collective leadership principles enshrined in our organization’s constitution, he has already removed himself from a position he was chosen to serve whilst creating a hostile environment for other loyal members. These behaviors display anti-democratic principles and utter disregards for rule of law, placing him in a position of the same authoritative leaders we took an oath to fight by all means.
In order to deter him from causing any further destruction and chaos to the organization’s objective, we have decided to remove him from his position as chairman of (OLF for Change). In accordance to our bylaws, formal and informal mediations, we have implemented all available strategies to resolve the issue. However, all our efforts fell on deaf ears of an individual who was determined to destroy the organization, by turning collective leadership embodied in our organization’s constitution into a single person controlled entity, which we are afraid greatly resembles that of his former boss, Melese Zenawi. General Kamal Galchu, by conducting in all of these destructive actions has lost the moral and legal ground to continue to lead our organization. Allowing him to continue with his dictatorial actions will destroy an organization, thousands, if not millions have lost their lives and are still losing to maintain. His lack of leadership skills has been a complete abomination. He has lost the trust, confidence and respect of the organization, both as a leader and a person.
Therefore, we the Executive Committee of the organization (OLF) made political decision and announce that general Kamal Galchu purged from his chairman position of the organization. Until the general assembly of the organization holds an official meeting and chooses a new Chairman/Chairwoman, senior members from the Executive Committee and National Council will lead the organization.
We will also take this opportunity to call upon leaders, individuals and groups who left this organization because of G/ Kamal Galchu’s tyrannical behavior to come back. Let’s stand together, under a unified objective and lead this great organization to victory for our people. We have no doubt that together; we can ensure great leadership with core principles that are based on teamwork, accountability & responsibility.
Finally, due to the mess that made by G/Kemal Galchu, the wayyane agents and those who have anti Oromo unity have infiltrated in our organization in the past. We assure that our organization has no fertile ground for the infiltrators and we call upon our members to give particular attention to watch infiltrators with great concern for the safety of our organization.

OromoTV.com:- The First Oromo Running for United States Senate: From Displaced Immigrant to Senate Candidate – Prof. Mohammed Abbajebel Tahiro
By EDITORIAL BOARD OF OromoTV.com
The United States, from its inception, has been the beacon of hope not only for immigrants and citizens alike, but the world. When most think of the United States, the first thing that comes to mind is the commitment to a free, fair and impartial democratic way of life. One that welcomes all to participate not only as voters, but potential candidates for a variety of elected offices at the local, state and federal levels. It is this level of commitment to democracy and economic opportunity that attracts immigrants from all over the world to the shores of the United States. In fact, President Barack Obama serves as a great reminder to Americans and the world what’s possible for those who aspire to hold office at the highest levels of government. Born to a Kenyan father and a Kansas woman, he embodies what one can achieve if they are willing to pursue their dream. No country in the world can boast of a democracy that makes the story of President Barack Obama possible.
Inspired by this incredible story and driven by the need to implement a fiscal responsibility, the first Oromo candidate for the Senate has emerged from the Lone Star State of Texas. For those unfamiliar with the Oromo people, they are the largest ethnic group in East Africa – numbering an estimated 40 million. The Oromos practice traditional Oromo religion “Waqafanna,” Christianity and Islam. However, they have faced centuries of persecutions from the Ethiopian government, and most recently, many Oromo students and adults alike were subjected to abuse, disappearance, torture and murder at the hands of the current regime. Continued persecutions have forced many to migrate to neighboring countries and beyond, including Kenya, Sudan, Egypt, South Africa, Norway, England, Germany, Canada and the United States. Fleeing centuries of upheavals, Oromo immigrants have called these countries and countless others home, and continue to fight for the rights of those who remain at the mercy of the Ethiopian government despite being the largest ethnic group in Ethiopia and the greater East Africa. Collectively, the Oromo language remains the fourth widely spoken language in all of Africa.
The emergence of the first Senate candidate dawns a new beginning for the entire Oromo diaspora. Professor Mohammed Abbajebel Tahiro was born and raised in Ethiopia. He attended the Addis Ababa University and was forced to migrate to neighboring Kenya due to political and social instabilities. He moved to the United States in 1989 in search of better opportunities free of political persecutions. In 1996 he married Shadia Omar, and they have four children. He moved from Minnesota, home to the largest Oromo diaspora community, to North Texas, where he started a logistical company. He earned his undergraduate, and subsequently, a graduate degree in Economics from the University of Texas. He is currently an Associate Professor of Economics at Collins College in Plano, Texas.

HRLHA believes that this is an outcome of the efforts of local, regional, and international human rights agencies, including HRLHA (http://www.humanrightsleague.org/?p=14955), who condemned the imposition of such a tough sanction against Minor Abde Jemal and demanded its reversal as well as different media organizations who echoed those outcries by the various human rights groups. However, HRLHA would like to express its appreciation to the Ethiopian Government, at both federal and regional levels, for the immediate and positive response to the strong reactions from the various groups of human rights advocacy and the media. HRLHA also calls up on the Ethiopian Government to adapt to such cultures of respecting and protecting fundamental rights of its citizens, regardless of their ages, gender, religious, and/or ethnic backgrounds, through abiding by the provisions of both constitutional and legal documents of the Country as well as the international human rights standardsthat it has ratified.
HRLHA would also like to take this opportunity to encourage fellow human rights agencies, advocacy groups, and media organizations so that they keep up with their efforts of fighting on behalf of those who were systematically made defenseless and speaking for those who were made voiceless.
Minor Abde Jemal was originally sentenced to four years in jail, along with nine other youth (whose prison terms, too, have been reduced to three months, but not released yet) on the 2nd of September, 2014 in a local adult court of Bilo Nopha District.

This year in Oslo,Norway , we celebrate the start of popular uprising known as 'revolt against subjugation ' of young Oromos against the tyrant woyane regime , remembering those univeristy students who have lost their precious life this year for the cause of their people, which offcoures, resulted in the beginning of new year to the Oromo struggle towards achieving its goal and its accompanied by the unity of all Oromos within the country and out in the diaspora in condemning the barbaric and brutal act of the minority regime. we also have made a big leap in establishing an independent media outlet that that is aimed to serve as a voice for this voiceless but majority people, now we can spead our voice all over the world thanks to the OMN.
Oromia shall Be Free.

UPDATED WITH SPEECH’S TEXT – 15-Year-Old Haawii’s Moving Speech on the Importance of Media, OMN and the Struggle to Uphold Afan Oromo
FULL SPEECH IN TEXT
OMN DAY IN TOROTNTO
Hello everyone, my name is Haawii.
While I have your focus and attention, I will highlight the importance as well as the significance of OMN which stands for Oromo Media Network. As you all know, OMN is a very important achievement in the struggle for Oromo freedom we are all very proud of.
Why Media Is Important?
I am 15 years old. My generation uses media more than ever so you can believe that I know about it very thoroughly. We need media so that our people and other nations in Oromia and around the world can learn about our struggle. Nowadays you can message people from Canada to Europe just by using a downloadable app. Imagine what we can do with our growing satellite television. This is very vital for the Oromo nation, a nation that is still fighting for even the most basics of rights; the right for its homeland, the right for its resources, and the right to develop its language and culture.
As we all know, information is power and OMN is one of the key means to circulate information around the world. It’s enough just to remember the uprising of Oromo students a few months ago and the role different media outlets played to bring Oromo people together regardless of where they were around the globe. With OMN we can do much more!
Back in the days, it would take months or even years for East Oromia to learn about what was happening all around Oromia. Today, thanks to OMN and all other social media outlets, we’ll know what’s happening to our people across Oromia in minutes and figure out the actions we can take across the globe.
But again, let me remind you that all this things are not gifts or grants to Oromo people. They were all earned through hard struggle and sacrifices. Let me bring you back into a little bit of Oromo’s history.
The invasion of Oromia by Abyssinians led to subjugation and suppression of Oromo culture, and our language so much more.
Here are some points:
• The Oromo language was outlawed from any official use
• Oromo cultural symbols and icons (like Irreecha for example) were banned
• Speaking the Oromo language was a source of ridicule
• Broadcasting in Afan Oromo was an impossible dream
• The enemies of the Oromo people joked that broadcasting in Afan Oromo would break the radio
• People had to change their Oromo names to be accepted in society.
During all these tragedies the Oromo people didn’t accept or live with it. They fought back at different times and places across Oromia. Many Oromo children and elders sacrificed their lives for the cause of Oromo freedom. But their sacrifices were not in vain. They have achieved victories for Oromo people in all fronts. Our people speak Afan Oromo with confidence. Kids are schooled in Afan Oromo across Oromia. Courts, mosques, Churches, Chaffe Oromo and other services are conducted in Afan Oromo.
Today, here and now, we are celebrating one of these victories. At the center of this celebration is OMN. Now we can get a lot of information about our people, language, culture, history, and so much more! Our elders have a platform for the first time to tell us the uncensored experiences of past atrocities committed against Oromo people. Our intellectuals can have an honest debate in front of Oromo people across the world about the different strategies to secure our freedom. All of these are possible because of OMN – our greatest national achievement.
Finally, it is important for my generation to take up their torches and lift them high. We have to march towards the complete freedom of Oromia. To that goal, OMN is our greatest hope.
Thank-you for your patience and time and please remember that OMN needs our continuous support to achieve its goals.
Victory to Oromo people!
OMN for ever!
Thank-you
OMN DAY IN TOROTNTO
