Speaking at the 22nd African Union Summit in Addis Ababa on
Thursday, Deputy Secretary of State William Burns expressed America’s
commitment to supporting the AU in its efforts to address hunger and
conflict.
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, Jan. 31 (UPI) – U.S.Deputy Secretary of State William Burns was
in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia this week for an African Union summit, where
he led a ten person delegation and spoke about America’s commitment to
Africa.
Speaking at a press conference at the 22nd AU Summit on Thursday, Burns commented on President Barack Obama‘s
efforts to strengthen U.S.-AU ties and to “realize the full potential
of that partnership.” That partnership, Burns went onto describe,
encompasses a range of shared interests, chief among them addressing
hunger — as well as conflict.
The AU proclaimed 2014 the “Year of Agriculture and Food Security.”
Burns noted that “on no issue are our efforts more aligned,” and cited
collaborative efforts to make Africa hunger-free by 2025 and President
Obama’s Feed the Future initiative.
“But as all of you know, in too many parts of this continent,
violence and conflict hold at risk the region’s economic progress.”
Burns then relayed America’s commitment to supporting the AU’s regional
peace and security efforts.
When reporters asked Burns about America’s position regarding tense
and fragile mediation efforts in South Sudan, Burns responded that the
U.S. will continue “to provide strong support to the IGAD mediation
effort” and that the U.S. delegation at the Summit planned to discuss
“further support efforts” with the IGAD mediation team later Thursday.
Reporters also asked the deputy secretary what it will take to “quell
the violence” in the Central African Republic. Admitting “we have no
illusion about the challenges that remain or the depth of human
suffering there,” he discussed American contributions to date. “The
United States is proud to have contributed… up to a 100 million dollars
in training, equipment and airlift support for AU forces, 45 million
dollars in humanitarian assistance, and 7.5 million dollars to date in
support for the reconciliation efforts.”
Burns was accompanied by a senior U.S. delegation that
comprised Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Linda
Thomas-Greenfield, Deputy to the U.S. Permanent Representative to the
United Nations Rexon Ryu, U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan
Donald Booth, U.S. Special Envoy for the Great Lakes and the DRC Russell
D. Feingold, USAID Associate Administrator Mark Feierstein, USAID
Assistant Administrator for Africa Earl Gast and Acting Assistant to the
Administrator for Food Security Tjada McKenna, Assistant U.S. Trade
Representative for Africa Florizelle Liser, and Special Assistant to the
President and NSC Senior Director for African Affairs Grant Harris.

SILENCE AND PAIN: ETHIOPIA’S HUMAN RIGHTS RECORD IN THE OGADEN
Martin Plaut | January 31, 2014
Introduction
The Ogaden is Ethiopia’s dark, dirty secret. It is far from prying international eyes, where almost anything can be done to anyone the government does not like.
The Ogaden was conquered and forcibly incorporated into Ethiopia by Emperor Menelik II in the last quarter of the 19th century. Its Somali speaking, almost exclusively Muslim community, never really accepted an Ethiopian identity. In 1977 it was the scene of an international conflict, as Somali President Siad Barre attempted to wrest the region from Ethiopia. The Soviet Union poured arms and Cuban troops into Ethiopia and the invasion was halted. The Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) has been fighting the Ethiopian government since 1995, and local people have been caught up in the conflict.
The Ethiopian authorities have sealed off the region to international journalists.
As Human Rights Watch wrote as early as 2008: “The Ethiopian government’s reaction to reports of abuses in 2007 has been to deny the allegations, disparage the sources, and actively restrict or control access to the region by journalists, human rights groups, and aid organizations (including by expelling the International Committee of the Red Cross in July 2007)”. [See Annex below] When two Swedes, Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson, entered the Ogaden with the ONLF in July 2011 they were captured. The two men were sentenced to 11 years in jail and only freed in September 2012, after appeals for clemency.[1]
As Human Rights reported:[2]
“Ethiopian troops have forcibly displaced entire rural communities, ordering villagers to leave their homes within a few days or witness their houses being burnt down and their possessions destroyed—and risk death. Over the past year, Human Rights Watch has documented the execution of more than 150 individuals, many of them in demonstration killings, with Ethiopian soldiers singling out relatives of suspected ONLF members, or making apparently arbitrary judgments that individuals complaining to soldiers or resisting their orders are ONLF supporters.”
Since 2008 few reliable reports have been published. The UN Commissioner for Human Rights has received submissions from time to time – some of them detailed and well sourced.[3] But they have received little international media attention.
A terrible silence has descended over the Ogaden.
In recent weeks I have been contacted by Ogadenis living in exile, who have begun to send me information. These testimonies cannot be independently verified, but since the alternative is not to speak about the human rights violations that are almost certainly taking place, I have decided to publish them.
The testimonies come at the same time as the mysterious disappearance of two senior ONLF negotiators from Nairobi.[4] The two men – Sulub Ahmed and Ali Hussein were members of the ONLF negotiation team that was in Nairobi for a proposed third round of talks with the Ethiopian government. They disappeared from a restaurant by men in three cars – the ONLF believes they were abducted by Kenyan and Ethiopian security forces and possibly taken by force into Ethiopia. The ONLF say this is the second time the Ethiopians have abducted and killed negotiators – the last time it happened in 1989.[5]
The story of Balidhuure
Balidhuure village, 150 kilometres South-East of the city of Harar, has been the scene of repeated atrocities carried out by Ethiopian security forces. The village, which is home to about 1,500 people, lives on its goat, sheep and camels. This is a dry semi-desert region, with low bushes providing what fodder the animals need. It should be a peaceful rural scene, but this is a region living in fear. Ethiopian troops patrol the villages and have bases in the main towns. Over the past 5 years repeated atrocities have been inflicted on local people, who are accused of supporting the liberation movement, the Ogaden National Liberation Front. This is the testimony of Captain Hassan Mohammed Abdi, who has since fled from the country. It offers a rare glimpse into an area from which all independent journalists have been banned, and from which international aid agencies are banned.
The Liyu Police – brutal arm of the Ethiopian state
Repression in the Ogaden is mainly carried out by the notorious Liyu Police; this is a locally recruited force that has been widely condemned for the repressive methods that it uses.
This is how the force is described by Human Rights Watch:[6]
“Ethiopian authorities created the Liyu (“special” in Amharic) police in the Somali region in 2007 when an armed conflict between the insurgent Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) and the government escalated. By 2008 the Liyu police became a prominent counterinsurgency force recruited and led by the regional security chief at that time, Abdi Mohammed Omar (known as “Abdi Illey”), who is now the president of Somali Regional State.
The Liyu police have been implicated in numerous serious abuses against civilians throughout the Somali region in the context of counterinsurgency operations. The legal status of the force is unclear, but credible sources have informed Human Rights Watch that members have received training, uniforms, arms, and salaries from the Ethiopian government via the regional authorities.”
In January 2013 it was reported that the Liyu police numbered between 10,000 and 14,000. The force was accused of numerous human rights abuses and summary executions.[7] The Guardian newspaper reported that it had seen an internal British government document, from the Department for International Development, indicating that there were plans to spend £13m–15m of aid money on the force as part of a five year “peace-building” programme. The report was denied by the British government, which said all funding would go via United Nations agencies and not through the Ethiopian authorities.[8]
Despite these assurances concern about the behaviour of the Liyu police remains. The testimony below and the reports of atrocities carried out in recent weeks indicate these are well placed.
Testimony of Captain Hassan Mohammed Abdi aka Hassan Afo, a former member of the Liyu Police, who was active with the force in Degehbur Province. June 2012.
“In Balidhuure village (Eastern Degehbur Province) located in between Gurdumi and Koore, a Liyu police unit that left from Aware and commanded by Major Kidinbir rounded up and finally driven away most of the people that lived in the area. Among them was a disabled man who walks with a stick named Ina-Yul-yul or the son of Yul-yul. Not far from the village of Balidhuure, the handicapped man, Ina-Yul-yul could not continue walking. One of the Liyu policemen noticed this and he informed Major Kidinbir by radio. Major Kidinbir said, “He can’t walk? Then kill him where he is at right now.” That’s how Ina-Yulyul was shot and killed. He was killed because of one of his brothers was among the ONLF fighters.”
Reports of human rights atrocities committed in the Ogaden Region over the previous month.
25/12/13: In Guna’gado district of Degahbur province, at least 25 civilians were detained and 25,000 Ethiopian birr was stolen from them
5/1/14: In Gasaangas in Hamara district 5 civilians are unlawfully detained. They were: Hassan Geday, Hassan Nour Moalim Ibrahim, Rukiya Moalim Ibraahin, Anbiya Sheikh Mohammed and Nafis.

Amnesty International on Ethiopia’s Ogaden region[9]
In September, the government and the ONLF briefly entered into peace talks with a view to ending the two-decade long conflict in the Somali region. However, the talks stalled in October. The army, and its proxy militia, the Liyu police, faced repeated allegations of human rights violations, including arbitrary detention, extrajudicial executions, and rape. Torture and other ill-treatment of detainees were widely reported. None of the allegations was investigated and access to the region remained severely restricted. In June, UN employee Abdirahman Sheikh Hassan was found guilty of terrorism offences over alleged links to the ONLF, and sentenced to seven years and eight months’ imprisonment. He was arrested in July 2011 after negotiating with the ONLF over the release of two abducted UN World Food Programme workers.
Human Rights Watch on Ethiopia’s Ogaden region
Ethiopia’s human rights situation since 2009 has been marked by a harsh intolerance for any criticism of government actions and a sharp decline in freedoms of expression and association. Critics of government policy continue to be subjected to harassment, arbitrary detention, and politically motivated prosecutions. Two repressive laws passed in 2009—the Charities and Societies Proclamation (CSO law) and the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation—have been used to decimate independent media and civil society organizations.
Political space has also constricted as the ruling party, the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF), has consolidated control, the EPRDF officially won 99.6% of the votes in the 2010 parliamentary elections after intimidating political opponents, restricting media, and ensuring political support through its control of access to government services and other resources. Over the past five years most legitimate political avenues for peaceful protest have been shut down and opposition leaders, civil society activists, and independent journalists have been jailed or forced to flee…

No amount of doctors training can change the equation but a just system that motivates and continues to inspire the educated to serve and, serve again!
Ibrahim Elemo, M.D., M.P.H | January 30, 2014
The following piece is in response to an article published on ayyaantuu.com about the brain drain of physicians and other skilled professionals from Ethiopia and other parts of Africa to Canada and other western countries. This is not a new story to many people. What is rather new to some of us is the Ethiopian government’s strategy to deal with this tragedy by massively producing physicians. I read this story a day after I called a 36 year school director who ended in a hospital, one hundred KM away from his home town only because he had a headache and found to have hypertension and given some medicine to control his blood pressure; where he came from there is actually a district level hospital. I spoke with the same person 2 days before, and to my best knowledge he was in good state of health. I called him and his phone was answered by his wife, who told me that he receiving urgent care in a hospital. I asked to speak with him; asked him how he feels and what medicine he was given. His blood pressure at the time I spoke to him was not elevated. I realized that the poor teacher was suffering not from hypertensive emergency but the side effects of the wrong blood pressure medication about which neither the patient nor the health professional had any idea that it could be causing his symptoms. His wife initially told me that they are planning to take him to a higher level immediately if he does not feel better. He is given two medicine, a rapid release Nifedipine and Furosemide. He continues to use it thinking that his BP is getting out of control and causing profound dizziness. You can imagine the financial impact of the poor quality of care. It could have costed the poor teacher thousands of Birr until he gets to a tertiary care level or a dedicated physician who reviews his medication, listens to his story well and tells him to stop taking the wrong medicine he was put on. This is the story of thousands of people if not every day, every week in a country where the government’s policy is to deal with the massive exodus of Physicians by overproducing physicians and saturating the domestic market. They have no strategy of retaining the best of the best but have strategy to use the worst of the worst among communities of people to rule over them indefinitely. To get back to the main reason why I decided to write this short piece; is reflecting on my own trajectory from “a committed subject” willing to serve his country to someone soon to be a professional selling his service for a fee in a western country.

Amhara’s far right Fundamentalist ‘Moresh’ leaders officially declare war on Oromo!
Moderator, Sidama National Regional State Information Net Work
January 25, 2014
A highly controversial far right fundamentalists Amhara organisation advocating to reclaim its lost hegemony officially declares war on the largest Ethiopia’s Oromo Ethnic nationals, on January 24, 2014 in its officially dispatched press statement in Amharic. Known under its Amharic name ‘Moresh Wogene Amhara Dirjit’ dispatched its unpalatable, unbalanced, uncivilised and potentially venomous propagandas against the Oromo nationals –erroneously blaming them for causing death and destruction to others Ethiopian nations and nationalities; more essentially accusing them of attempting to destroy the concept of Ethiopianism created by Abyssinian king ‘Atse Menelik II’ who had colonised nations and nationalities of Ethiopia to create today’s Ethiopian Empire’s geo-political shape.
Moresh group also claims that the Ethiopian empire is being built by the bloods of their ancestors, yet, they think that the bloods of colonised nations and nationalities are less relevant thus relegated.
Conceived, crafted and being led by the historical grandchildren of those who have brutally crushed the Oromo, Sidama, Wolayta, Gedeo’s, Ogadenia, Kambatas and Hadiya, Shakacho and Kafficho and others nations and nationalities creating today’s Ethiopia; Moresh supporters strongly believe that they are the only ones who must rule their colonial subjects without being challenged. The language, culture, religion and ways of life imposed on the subjects by the colonial masters remain to this date visible in entire Ethiopia creating utter confusion on uneducated groups of people about their identities. When someone decides to stick to his/her root the claimants (Moresh groups) accuse such groups of educated subjects of being narrow minded renegade ethno-nationalists. Whoever raises the issues related with self-identity is automatically regarded as a threats to Ethiopia and Ethiopianism; by implication to those who ruled over others since their colonial expansion.
Under the pre-1991 rules of the Amhara regimes, the languages of the subjects often remain subjugated and ridiculed. It has been also emphasised and re-emphasised that if the languages of Oromo/Sidama/Gedceo/Wolayta comes to Radio, (Moresh groups used to claim) that the languages of others, other than Amharic breaks Radio or TV and others more worst claims. Such attitudes and perceptions among such groups r to this date emain pervasive; and due to such deep seated beliefs and sustained propagandas of the rulers, the subjects were unwillingly driven to forget their own identities by considering the imposed culture, language, religion and ways of life as if it was theirs. Such is the way of life of subjugation and political paradigm the Moresh groups are claiming to be bring it back. Hooray!! Well come back Slavery!!
Praising the groups of subjugated peoples who completely deny their identity was a common practice and such groups subjugated peoples have been even elevated to a higher authorities and given fake statuses and artificially created cosmetic respects to emphasise that those who deny who they are often respected as such. Changing names of the subjects to the rulers’ was also a commonly practiced phenomenon. On most occasions changing names was mandatory to go Scholl and earn employment during the pre-1974 revolution under the rules of Moresh’s current advocates, fathers and grandfathers. When the peoples of oppressed nations and nationalities raise these, Moresh groups often become extremely paranoid and act irrationally.
The others who want to stick to their roots and proud of themselves are often regarded as uncivilised who worship Devil (indigenous cultural and religious beliefs and practices-sadly forgetting their own Debra belief cultures); therefore they must be completely changed. Aaftrtwards, these groups of people often forcefully baptised to accept an Orthodox Christianity from the inception of colonial expiation; as it was the case with European colonialism whose colonisers came up with triple ‘C’ (Christianity, Commerce and Civilisation); actually I add the forth ‘C’ which was the main reason for the colonial expansion of Europeans as well as Atse Menilik II’s regime which I call it a ‘Conquest’.
Atse Meilik II’s conquering army used similar tactics, actions, also had similar ambition and drive for territorial expansion, exploitation, enslavement and ultimately had adopted similar subjugating techniques against the subjects. The Moresh groups in their press statement are telling the subjects that the subjects are still feeling inferior for the fact that the subjects don’t feel comfortable with the Status-Quo unless the nations and nationalities are effectively De-Colonised. I think they are correct!! If one thoroughly reads their yesterday’s press statement with eagle eyes and with the attention of elephant ears, one can see what I’m discussing about.
Why are they huffing and puffing unnecessarily while the fact remains that they remain the primary culprits for ongoing tragedy unfolding in entire Ethiopian empire to this date? I’m not, however, exonerating the current diabolic TPLF regime that shows its excellently progressive constitution but dehumanises the peoples of nations and nationalities.
Although the current TPLF led authoritarian regime isn’t different in its substances from its predecessors; however, theoretically it has in its constitution granted nations and nationalities rights to the level of self-determination not only exercising their cultures but also they are superficially able to use their languages as a learning and working medium despite the resistances of Moresh groups ever since it was introduced soon after 1992. Doing so obliged the Moresh groups to label TPLF led regime as pariah renegades. Therefore, Moresh groups accuse the regime of inciting violence and fuelling disagreements between the two Ethiopian largest ethnic nationals, the Oromo and Amhara; the reasons Moresh groups are beating war drum; boasting that they know how to fight against the Oromo and threaten that the worst yet to come, therefore, they claim that the unfortunate situation befalling an Oromo and others subjugated nations and nationalities will be much worse than it has ever been since the conquest. What a fantastic puff!!
Moresh groups often puffed and huffed such claims for lengthy period of time since 1991 whenever their deep seated beliefs are effectively challenged, the Oromos currently are doing with others subjugated nations and nationalities. Oromo’s Qubbe generation is defying such deep rooted beliefs of the Moresh groups, it is therefore becoming formidable power, the former rulers don’t want to see and can’t tolerate. Thus, they are extremely becoming anxious and started acting irrationally to declare a kind of an official war against Oromo people who did nothing- but demanded their fundamental rights to be firstly respected and to be recognised as an equal stakeholders in their own land; and secondly tried to decipher the historical injustices imposed on their nation to logically challenge and categorically denounce and reject these. What is wrong here? Any logical and conceptual argument contrary to doing such?
Adolf Hitler is unconditionally and continuously condemned for his barbarism to this date on daily, monthly and yearly basis. The victims of his heinous crimes against humanity are receiving compensation from the Germany government whose ancestors have caused such diabolic crimes. The Oromo whose ancestor were similarly brutalised didn’t ask for compensation from Moresh groups, yet decided to remember their victims by erecting memorial monument; does this cause the descendants of those criminals to officially declare war against the Oromo and others subjugated nations and nationalities who are logically and legally arguing the actions of such barbaric rulers shouldn’t be condoned? What do Moresh Groups think the way forward if they decided to stick to their obdurate attitudes, erroneous beliefs and illogical arguments? http://welkait.com/?p=2262?
Numerous peoples of colonised nations and nationalities advise Moresh and its supporters to walk with the walks of 21st century and its civility to think logically instead of thinking with barbarism of Stone-age mentality.

We have tried hard to tell our foes to respect our God given rights.
My Oromo fathers, mothers, brothers, and sister.
We have tried hard to tell our foes to respect our God given rights. We have tried hard to negotiate with them to live together as good neighbours respecting each others’ rights. We tried hard to let them accept the principles of humanity and religious values. But these hard headed guys have no way to listen or learn. They have no eyes to see, no ears to hear, no mind to think. They have no interest to live with others unless they are worshiped, unless they hold the supremacy, unless everybody else accept as God given slave and servant to them.
They do not accept their own history of distraction. They rather consider murdering and mutilating millions of Oromos as a holly war. We asked them to accept the guilt and apologise, but they ask us to praise them for their barbaric acts. They invaded our land both in war and in peaceful ways and destroyed our livelihood, our respect, our dignity and our family. We were murdered and massacred by the war and we were taken to the market as a lamb and sold to slavery. Despite this we welcomed them to our house, made them coffee, gave them milk and honey. Above and beyond, we loved them as our family, shared our land with them and let them stay among us. They used the “Soddaa” and “abaliji” systems just as they used against Wallo Oromo to calm our fight for freedom and our right.
Despite all the physical and psychological attach from the Amhara, even today some Oromos believe that there is a hope of these people to respect our values and try to live together. But the truth is the opposite. Starting from the 1991 of establishment of Oromo region , these people were and are working in all possible ways to dismantle Oromia, ban Oromo language and culture, and above all come to their dream of the “supremacy of Amhara people”. They preach unity, equality, freedom, and sovereignty of the country as a pre context to smash both individual and group rights. In 2005 they were nearly implanted themselves back to their old rotten system. Currently they have many projects and organisation including political groups both inside the country and in Diaspora which restlessly work both in propaganda and fund collection activities.
This group of people are at war with Oromo political organisation both in the country and those in the opposition group. For them, there is no difference between Oromo political organisation that government supports or oppose. Both are their historic enemies and thus they work against both of them. Sometimes, they write against the Oromo People Democratic Organisation (OPDO) more than what is even not done by other Oromo opposition groups. They write against their legitimacy, helplessness, powerless and meaningless because of the TPLF leadership, while at the same time write good things, encouraging things about the Amhara group which is under the same government. Regarding Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), thank God, Amhara is not ruling America and Europe nor America and European listen to their nonsense cries. If this happens to be the case; let alone OLF members any single Oromo could have faced other Callanqo massacre everywhere.
Today we know these guys more than ever. They by no means accept our rights respected. Thus, they by no means are trusted as good neighbours let alone as family member in Oromia. Today they are collecting money from all of their riches both inside and out side the country to get weapons and restart the crusade against us. Unfortunately most of the fund comes out of Oromia, from Oromo ourselves. We bring the money to their shops and hotels, but they are funding the groups that are standing against our rights. This is not a speculation or just an idea from the hate of such people. This is proved many times. The money is collected from each Amhara merchant and sent to those who fight against us. I never forget the story of 200 kilograms’ of roasted barely ready by a hotel owner in to be sent to the groups who were fighting OLF. This was found at an Amhara hotel in western Oromia. Every time such things happen, lesson is given to these people, but they do not listen; they do not want to listen. They rather continue dividing us along zones, and now trying it along religion. We tried many times, to fight the silent terror of these people with love and maturity. We tried hard to help them, help themselves. We tried hard to tell them what we need; tried to show the middle ground for both Oromo and Amhara. But they fail to accept any middle ground unless they are superior, unless their idea is fully implemented. Now they are in a full war against Oromo, clearly stating their intention to the second ground of Minilik holly war, both psychological and physical war. Thankfully, we are not in the same situation as in the 19th century. Today Oromo can not only fully protect against any aggression, but can fully defeat any attempts.
Every single Oromo now has to wakeup, and understand what is going in his/her village both in towns and cities. It is now more than anytime ever to think Oromo, to act Oromo and to live Oromo. Today our friends and our foes are clearly demarcated. The fight for our freedom and right should be in all sorts and forms of our live. We need to responsibly spend our money, and need to decide who we should give it to. There is no doubt our many which goes to Amhara shops and hotels will work against our interest and fight us back. More than that when we go to their shops and hotels including any business of these people, we do not get any respect.
This is a true story that happened to me in 2007. I went to a shop in a small town in western Oromia and asked for a battery to buy. There was a title boy of approximately 12years old was in the shop. I asked him how much the price of the battery he brought to me is. My question was in Afaan Oromo. Can you image what that little boy replied to me? What language is that you just speaking? The tone and attitude of the speech was a compete disrespect and hate for the language I spoke. This is after 13 years of Afaan Oromo being taught in schools. This was from a technically refugee who came from other place to live in Oromia, disrespecting the people and the language he was refugee. This little fellow is not alone, at least his family is behind him.
This is my brotherly/sisterly call to all Oromo old and young, men and women, literate or illiterate, in towns or villages. Buy anything you buy from Oromo or from friends or Oromo. Sell anything you sell to Oromo or friends of Oromo. Boycott any Amhara business, whether a small shop or a big hotel, whether in town or in village, whether it belongs to your “soddaa” or your “Abalij”. It may be cheaper, but this should not cost your dignity. This is a call from the bones and blood of our fallen heroes and heroines in the fight against tyranny. This is a call from our heroes and heroines in prison in the name of Oromo. Boycott Amhara business anywhere.
Fight Amhara terrorists this easy way.

The Ever-increasing Crime of TPLF/EPRDF Brutal regime
By Getinet Dinkayehu | Januray 27, 2014
The continuous arrests, detention, torture and disappearance of people in Oromia should indeed be a cause for concern to every Oromo people living in the country and abroad. The past 22 years have been the most painful period in Oromia. A week hardly passes without someone being picked up and detained by the TPLF security agents for one unexplained reason or another. The Last couple of weeks I have received a lot of messages from Oromo nationalists residing in western parts of Oromia through my emails, which I preferred not to mention their names here because of their security. Here is the message I received from one friend in “Afaan Oromo” and I wanted to put it in English as follows; “I am in deep tensions and annoyed because of the case associated with my family. My father was a respected businessman in our local area. Now about two weeks are passed since my father left his home and his whereabouts still unknown. Following his disappearance the TPLF Trojan horse better known as OPDO imprisoned one of my family members and coercing to reveal where my father is. What I knows about my father is, after he openly started criticizing the evil doings of the TPLF led Ethiopian regime and the Puppet OPDOs on different public meetings; he was continually harassed and even received several death threats including the family. He was arrested at different times suspected of OLF member without due legal process and without family visitations, tortured and interrogated at gunpoint to reveal the agents he was working with for OLF. The reason why he was mainly targeted as criminal and went to jail at different times is not because he was a criminal or have done anything wrong against anybody, but only because he protested that why his Oromo brothers and sisters were cold-bloodedly killed by TPLF securities without any reasons and because he protested against the widespread injustices being committed by the regime agents in Oromia. When my father was in woyanes secret detention center, the inhuman treatments he experienced at the hand of the torturers were horrible and even some part of his face was disfigured because of the massive tortures”.
Indeed this is a daily practice of the regime against many Oromo in wider scale. I personally know many Oromo; outstanding students, teachers, business men who were unlawfully detained by woyane securities or disappeared and their families are not informed of their whereabouts.
The most worrisome situation still going in various parts of western Oromia is that, people always branded as criminals and unlawfully detained only for being an Oromo and alleged association with the OLF or sympathizing with Oromo opposition political organizations. Despite a lack of any evidence against those people, the security agents continuously torture them in secret detention centers. Also other friends from the same area said that, to pick up peoples at night and take to prison is still a daily practice of woyane securities. Imagine sitting with your family waiting to have the dinner only to receive a knock on your door that you are wanted for questioning. You are then whisked away from your beloved family without anyone knowing your whereabouts, condition of detention or what crime you might have committed. This is exactly what peoples in many parts of Oromia still going through. Many people disappeared or been killed in a very systematic way simply because they exercised their fundamental rights. Diverting the mobile phone to their security forces and internet censorships are being practical on many people. The current human rights situation in western Oromia is terrible and repugnant. There is woyanes rule that does not tolerate any form of criticism in the area at all. Even the very slightest criticism of the government in the area could land a person in jail and charge with terrorism or “shororkeessumma”(in puppet OPDOs definition). Now this situation is highly forcing people to live under great fear and uncertainties than ever. It has become normal for the people in western Oromia to simply disappear into thin air; especially those who dare to criticize the government or who are reported by their adversaries to the regime securities.
It is very annoying when the TPLF minority led regime blatantly continues through its security forces to unlawfully arrest and detain anybody they perceive as an opponent. To add insult to injury, Most of the detainees are seldom informed of their rights and/or reason for their arrest or detention and are often held beyond the time limit without charge contrary to the edicts of the so called constitution. Several productive youths are running away to escape the difficult life that controlled the area. Activism for democracy, human rights and justice are being met with secret killings, torture, arbitrary arrests and detention. The name TPLF security or “Dehninet” has brought a great fear to every Oromo hearth, whenever someone is picked up. Some remain silence because they are afraid to speak up against what is going on.
We have seen that On the beginning of this year January 2014, when people on the world joyfully celebrated the New Year and wished peace, security improvements and prosperity to their own people, in contrary the Ethiopian Federal Court gave a prison sentence to 45 people, Most of them are Oromo nationalist political prisoners sentenced to three to twelve years in prison. Without committing any crime against anybody, they were unlawfully arrested in 2010 and were accused of being members or sympathizers of the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF). This alone can publically tell that TPLF/EPRDF regime has totally cracked down on political freedoms and continued committing widespread human rights violations with total impunity. Ethiopia today is ;the only country where the government publically labeled genuine dissents as terrorists and criminals, the worst kept secret killing field and the most politically intolerant regime in Africa. It is the country where the rule of law, good governance and the sanctity of human life are alien concepts. It is the country where torture, enforced disappearances, extra-judicial executions, detention without trial, statutory murder and extra-judicial convictions has become officially rooted as normal governance practices and intensifies its containment of democracy each day, and rules strictly through the instrument of paralyzing fear and the practice of brutality against ordinary citizens.
We have seen that when told the reality of Oromo, they call it anti-national or terrorism. For long we have seen that the TPLF owned Media distort the truth of Oromo for their own cause. For long we have seen that their Media created false and fabricated stories on Oromo nationalists. For long we have seen that several Oromo nationalists who were unlawfully detained And languishing in prison have been denied justice by TPLF court judges who were hired by a regime whose sole aim is to brutalize, torture and silence anybody against their tyrannical style of governance. For long we have seen that many innocent people unjustly sentenced to life term and death.
The TPLF minorities are all the leaders of the executive the legislative, judiciary and military branch, their words are final and anyone who goes against their authority is doomed. They are all the lawmen’s, the judges, the jury and the executives. They act as the ‘Creators’ of the people in Ethiopia, They decides who walks freely or shackled in jail, live, work and/or die. Judges are hired and fired by the TPLF cadres without any explanation. They owe their entire livelihoods to them and they determine who comes before these judges and the sentences they receive. Now, getting justice for Oromo in Ethiopia under TPLF is compared to hunting for a dinosaur in this day and age. It is very dangerous for the people when a single party members from one minority group has all such powers and even more dangerous if there is no accountability and no limit. No single party or leaders should have absolute power to run a nations single handily and with iron fist.
What is the future for Oromo? Will there be any conductive environment where all Oromo people will be free from such kinds of fear, intimidation, torture, arrest and humiliation to express their legitimate rights and fundamental human rights which remains Unthinkable under TPLF gangs? No family, groups and businesses should count themselves safe from persecution, arrest, humiliation, detention without trial and torture under this brutal regime. We Oromo should be brave enough to come out from every corner and fight against the ever worsening injustices that continue to bedevil our motherland. Everyone, irrespective of party or group, is duty bound to act. In our journey to Demand our freedom, we must be ready to use every Avenue. The injustices meted on us are enough.
We should not expect the westerners to bring about the change we are seeking for in our Land, it’s we” Oromians ” who has to come together under one umbrella with a sole purpose of eradicating Dictators and liberating our people. We might not be united in the same political party but we should be united in the same course in fighting dictatorship. Look at the likes of Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. It’s the voices of the people that brought about change from the streets of Tunis to Tripoli to Benghazi and from the Cairo to Alexandria. It has come to a point in which we also need to do anything to get our freedom. For any meaningful political change to take place, the people must take it upon themselves to effect the change. As a result, we must not expect that an angel will descend from heaven and liberate us from Dictators. But the onus of liberating Oromia from oppression is every Oromians obligation.
Fellow Oromians, Let us ask ourselves these simple questions. With logic, we understand how our people are dying in silence.
Why TPLF led Ethiopian regime mainly targets Oromo people; intellectuals, Businessmen, teachers, university students, artists and entrepreneurs?
Why many Oromo on a daily basis are being arrested and detained without genuine reasons?
Why many Oromo are missing and their whereabouts remain unknown by their family and love ones?
Why many Oromo are still languishing in jail without trial or have had their trials delayed?
Why many Oromo Nationalists were shot dead in their home and in public by TPLF securities?
Why many people have been fired from their jobs and schools for no apparent reasons?
Why many lands and properties have seized and looted from Oromo under this regime?
Why many Oromo on daily basis are fleeing TPLF/EPRDF persecution and suffering in neighboring countries and dying in deserts?
How on earth one can be sentenced to life term or death penalty only for demanding his Freedom without committing any crime against anybody?
Tsunamis of Human right violations of the above are well documented and are available online.
Do we as a people only have to speak the truth and or condemn injustice only when it affects us directly and or personally? This is a question that I am posing to some people who are in a position of this regime today. To those dummy OPDO leaders who continue to carry out TPLFs dirty works be warn that you will all be going down with them. The world is now a global village and war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by any person or party will never go free. The choice is yours.
To those who think they have no say or voice on the atrocities committed against our people, Martin Luther King Jr. In the end, we will not remember the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends. Oromia is under silenced bleeding by this evil regime. If we see injustice and remain silent, we have sided with evil. We have seen that Killing Oromo is the trade mark of this regime. These killings are not spontaneous or accidental they are done intentionally to silence the whole people.
Therefore, to prevent further injustice and sufferings there needs to be a collective response to the giant atrocities in Oromia. We all have a duty to ensure that we free our land from TPLF/EPRDF dictatorship. This should be done with united front and sincere commitments. I hope the sooner we all look at freedom as an inherent human right that is a prerequisite for any society to progress, and not as a “gift” to be given to only to the deserving, the sooner we will face this challenge as one nation UNITED in the destruction on tyranny! Oppression cannot stand forever, and it shall be replaced with freedom.
So, Fellow Oromians at home and Diaspora, Let us all rise up in unison and demonstrate against this brutal regime and fight for our freedom and for the freedom of all political prisoners who are inhumanly suffering in Ethiopia.

The Ever-increasing Crime of TPLF/EPRDF Brutal regime
