Jawar Mohammed | April 22, 2013
Alert Forest Fire ! Reports have been pouring to my inbox and email overnight stating that the UNESCO registered Yayu Forest, located in Ilu Ababora, has been burning for the last two weeks. Once again the government has imposed media blackout, according to several journalists working for the government TV and radio stations who have been prevented from reporting on the issue. Those of you in the region please send us more information and lets spread the news as to increase pressure on the authorities to act quickly.

  1. The fire was ignited (lit) intentionally to clear the way for the TPLF led Coal mining in the area. The forest was one of the major obstacles to the Coal mining production as an environmental concern was rising to protect the forest from the Coal mining process and Fertilizer factory planned to be placed in the area surrounding the Forest.
