Teen’s gang rape in Addis Ababa sounds alarm


More than 70 percent of Ethiopian women face physical and sexual violence

referencesNovember 29, 2014 (Aljazeera) — Hanna Lalango, 16, died on Nov. 1, from a brutal gang rape after five men kidnapped and held her captive for several days in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. Hanna attended a private high school in the city’s Ayer Tena neighborhood.
On Oct. 1, the day of her kidnapping, Hanna, the youngest of six siblings, “complained about not feeling well” before she left for school. “She was a typical young girl … a timid and respectful child,” Hanna’s brother told Blen Sahilu, who first posted the story on Facebook, as part of the online #JusticeForHanna campaign. “She was really nice.”
Hanna reportedly left school around 4 p.m. local time and got on a taxi that already had a couple of passengers. It is unclear at what point Hanna knew she was being kidnapped. But the culprits allegedly threatened the teen with knife and took her to one of the suspect’s house. Reports vary but Hanna’s father told the local media she was raped for at least five days.
Hanna’s kidnappers had other plans. They apparently
contacted her sisters by phone, perhaps to kidnap them as well. They met the sisters at an arranged place, driving the same minibus, and reportedly asked them to come along. When they refused, the men drove off, exclaiming, “You won’t see your sister then!” A few days later, the suspects left Hanna to die in an abandoned area in the outskirts of the city. Hanna was found unconscious on Oct. 11 and taken to hospital.
“My phone rang 11 days after Hanna disappeared, it was the voice I missed,” Hanna’s father told the U.S.-based Admas Radio last week. “She was weak and exhausted.” For the next few days the family spent going between various referral hospitals and waiting to be admitted. Among other injuries, Hanna suffered from fistula and lost her battle 19 days after she was found. She reportedly identified three of the five suspects from her hospital bed.
On Nov. 19, police brought five suspects before the First Appearance Court in Addis Ababa, according to local reports. During a hearing attended by journalists and women right’s groups, one of the suspects pleaded innocence and all five denied the allegations, telling the court their initial confessions were obtained under duress. The police denied torturing the suspects and asked for 14 days to conduct further investigation.
Hanna could have been saved. The police were slow to investigate the case as a sexual crime. The hospitals failed to treat Hanna’s case with the outmost urgency the situation demanded. I broke down in tears as I read about Hanna’s ordeal. I tried to imagine what she might have felt as her captors took turns to satisfy their desires. I imagined how helpless she might have felt. I imagined Hanna worrying and speculating about how to deal with this tragedy or even tell her parents. Hanna spent days on the streets after suffering a brutal gang rape. It took her few days to call her parents and seek help. It remains unclear whether this was planned or a random incident. But Hanna’s story is far from isolated.

Guilt and sexual trauma

Ethiopia is a deeply patriarchal, closed and conservative country. It has one of the highest rates of sexual violence in the world. More than 70 percent of Ethiopian women face physical and sexual violence, according to a study by the World Health Organization (WHO). Seven percent of girls surveyed by WHO reported experiencing sexual abuse before the age of 15. Seventeen percent said their first sexual experience was forced. The country also has one of the highest rates of bridal kidnapping or marriage by abduction.
Most women and girls keep incidents of rape and sexual abuse secret to avoid societal shunning. About 39 percent never talk to anyone about the violence and the violations they endure, according to WHO. Even fewer women ask authorities for help. Some 53 percent feared repercussions and threats from their partners, while another 37 percent “considered the violence ‘normal’ or ‘not serious,’” the WHO report said.
Worse still, most gender-based violence is solved through family arbitration and socially sanctioned compensation for the victim’s family. As a result, women often don’t feel the need to go public with their story. Therefore, it is not surprising that Hanna’s kidnappers reportedly sent “elders” seeking reconciliation with her parents even as Hanna clung to her last breath in a hospital bed.
The daily ordeal of women in Addis Ababa consists of finding another route to school to escape from the guy who threatened to kill them or maim their face.
Hanna’s story took me back to Addis Ababa, where people walk past you even when they can clearly see that you are in danger. It is a city where the police yell at the victim for running away from a man forcing her into an unwanted relationship or sexual intimacy.
“Addis Ababa is a jungle, be careful,” a friend advised me when I first moved to the city. It didn’t take me long to understand what she meant. In the 10 years that I lived in the city, I learned to cope with endless gazes and widely accepted catcalling. Addis Ababa is one of the country’s few major metropolises. To be sure, city women fare relatively better than their rural counterparts: They drive new cars, they are fashionistas, they hang out at upscale cafes along the famed Bole road, they watch American movies at the city’s upscale Enda Mall and Movie Theater (enjoying popcorn), and they go to sauna and spa every weekend.
But this city of beautiful women has another less known, darker face. In fact, the city’s cosmopolitan character gives the impression that Addis women don’t deal with sexual violence. Hanna’s heart-wrenching story also reminded me of an incident that I will never forget.
I was a young lecturer at Addis Ababa University, then in my early 20s. One afternoon, a colleague from the university invited me for lunch. He took me to a place he said was his favorite near Arat Kilo neighborhood. The restaurant was located a walking distance of off the main road and looked like a place no self-respecting man would take a girl on the first date — a hole-in-the-wall in a residential neighborhood on a barely paved road. After we ate lunch, my colleague went to the bar and whispered something to one of the servers, and returned to ask me to go to the backside for “more privacy.” By then I was growing suspicious of his mannerisms and refused the request. First he tried to persuade me and then he reached and pulled my arms to force me to go with him.
The restaurant owner and customers stood puzzled as I struggled to get away from him. To cover up his brazen acts, he started pretending as if we were married or in some kind of relationship. One of the guys at the restaurant offered to help. I asked him to find a police at which point the restaurant’s owner insisted that I leave. “I don’t want police to come here and ask me to be a witness,” he said. I told him I wouldn’t leave until I know that I am safe.
Shortly afterwards, the gentleman returned with two young policemen. For a minute I felt safe. I told the cops what happened. “It is all your fault,” one of the officers exclaimed. “Why would you go for lunch with him unless you are interested.” I felt insulted and humiliated in front of the restaurant’s patrons. I made it home safe that day but said nothing of my colleague who continued to threaten to get me fired for years unless I slept with him.
As a counselor at AAU, my students came to me with their problems thinking I was better of. I was older than most, but my lot was not better. I received no protection from the university or law enforcement. My students told of sleepless nights worrying about how they would make it to class the next day amid men who wake up early in the morning to do nothing but harass and intimidate them.
In contrast with those in rural areas, a woman in Addis maybe educated and assertive but they are not protected. Their daily ordeal consists of finding another route to school to escape from the guy who threatened to kill them or maim their face. It means making up stories to tell your parents about the bruises on your nose after a boyfriend punched you, or a redeye or a bruise on your chin from a guy you refused to date. It is an untold story of countless women who live with the trauma and guilt of sexual violence. There is simply no good reason or justification for a man to put his hand on a woman. And no women should go through this in the 21st century. But there are few guarantees.

A wakeup call

Hanna’s story received scant attention from the government-run media. Hanna’s story saw the light of day thanks to social media. So far only a handful of Ethiopian outlets carried the story, offering a brief account of Hanna’s kidnapping and rape. Last week, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs held a press conference and pledged to assist with the investigation. However, the Ministry is a political instrument for the country’s rulers and lacks the power and necessary resources to address the pervasive violence against women in Ethiopia. The officials spend more time ballyhooing the government’s record on gender equality to donors while ignoring the normalized sexual and physical violence against women. Independent human rights work is severely restricted. There are no community-based initiatives that can deal with the culturally sanctioned harassment, abuse and discrimination against women.
Hanna’s horrific death should serve as a wakeup call for all Ethiopian women. Sexual and physical violence does not discriminate. Educated or not, teenage or fully-grown women — every woman in Ethiopia is a potential victim. As Sahilu rightly noted, “rape is not about sex,” it is about traditional notions of power. Our society shames and disempowers victims while the rapists are let off the hook under the cover of culture and traditionalism. Nothing could ever bring back Hanna but her death is an opportune moment for Ethiopian women to unite and fight to end gender-based violence. It is the least we can do to honor Hanna.

From time to time, certain individuals who display courage and self-sacrifice for the greater good emerge to make a lasting impact on the lives of entire communities. The late Jatani Ali Tandhu (“Shaalaqa”) was such a figure, born into a Borana family in southern Ethiopia.

Jatani Ali Tandhu: Life & Legacy of a Borana Statesman is a biographical account of an outstanding and much-loved former governor of Borana Administrative Region of southern Ethiopia, from his birth to the fateful day of his assassination in Nairobi in 1992.
          The biography gives readers a glimpse into the life and work of a distinguished Borana, Oromo and Ethiopian leader. It is hoped that many young people from these communities will be inspired to follow in his footsteps in aiming to lift their people out of demeaning poverty, years of misrule and hopelessness. An everlasting monument to Jatani is not a statue cast from a bronze but the legacy that lives on in people’s lives and minds, to inspire current and future generations to follow his example, in having the education, dedication and courage to serve their communities honourably.

Tadhi knew Jatani Ali from the time of the latter’s admission to Medhane Alem Boarding School in Addis Ababa in 1952. They became close friends as they grew up together and were concerned about the dire living conditions of people in their home region of Borana. Because of their close friendship, Tadhi knows a great deal about Jatani’s life and accomplishments. Tadhi graduated from universities in Ethiopia and USA. Oromos in London (and the UK) marched in front of Westminster, Parliament Square, on November 26, 2014, to call attention to the repression against the Oromo people by the Tigrean military occupying Oromia. In October 2014, a detailed report, entitled “‘BECAUSE I AM OROMO’ – SWEEPING REPRESSION IN THE OROMIA REGION OF ETHIOPIA,” was published by the London-based Amnesty International. Thousands of Oromos were killed, and others imprisoned and/or exiled over the last 23 years since the occupation of Oromia by the Tigrean military government of Ethiopia. Protesters have asked the UK government to severe its financial support to the Tigrean military government of Ethiopia; the Tigrean military government uses the money from the West to finance its repression in Oromia (#BecauseIAmOromo).

100 Ethiopians arrested in Karonga: Five Malawi citizens nabbed for aiding illegal entry

November 19, 2014 (Nyala Times) — Malawi Police  swooped 100 Ethiopian migrants in Karonga near the border with Tanzania who entered the country without authorised documents.
Karonga police spokesperson Enock Livason said the Ethiopian migrants were arrested together with five Malawians who had facilitated their illegal entry.
The five Malawians are Thoko William 22 years, of Yapola village Traditional Authority Mkuwula in Dowa, Shaibu Ajibu 32 of Misigwida village TA Maganga in Salima, Majuto Mwaisopo 30 of Katolola village TA Kyungu in Karonga and Stain Chimanile 22 of Madisi village TA Mponela in Dowa.
“These entrants used two different vehicles belonging and driven by Malawians who escaped and abandoned the cars after seeing the police but were later arrested,” he said.
He said the police managed to intercept the group after communities around Ipyana and Mwenelondo areas tipped them on the strange faces who were moving around.
Livason urged the communities to continue providing information to the police when they come across movement of such people.

Commenting on the matter Paramount Chief Kyungu said “it is high time that Malawi government should take issues of illegal immigrants seriously and put an immediate intervention.”
Kyungu suggested that the government should make agreement with neighboring counties to help in arresting the problem so that a proper way of repatriating the illegal immigrants is discovered.

Oromo Athlete Amane Gobena takes the honour at the Istanbul Marathon for the third time

 


amane_gobenaNovember 17, 2014 (IAAF) — Amane Gobena took the honours at the 2014 Vodafone Istanbul Marathon, winning at the IAAF Gold Label Road Race in 2:28:46 on Sunday (16).
The women’s race had a runner who decided to take matters into her own hands early in the race.
Local road running talent Ummu Kiraz of Turkey led from the start and passed 5km in 17:50 and 10km in 35:25. However, Ethiopia’s Emebt Etea, Amane Gobena and Salomie Getnet kept the gap to around 80 metres, with the home hope Elvan Abeylegesse, Ukraine’s Olena Burkovska and London 2012 Olympic Games bronze medallist Tatyana Petrova Arkhipova close behind.
By the halfway point, covered in 1:14:52, Kiraz was still in the lead by 29 seconds over what had become a six-women pack,
However, around 25 kilometres, race favourite Gobena decided to haul in Kiraz and increased her pace, taking the lead two kilometres later and she passed 30km at 1:46:03, 26 seconds faster than Kiraz and Getnet.
Abeylegesse was running just behind the chasing pair but Burkovska and Petrova Arkhipova were by now another 100 metres in arrears.
Gobena carried on forging ahead and remained unchallenged until the finish line, finishing almost two minutes ahead of anyone else.
Getnet was second in 2:30:36, Burkovska was third with 2:31:30 and Petrova Arkhipova took fourth place with 2:31:47.

Former 5000m world record holder Abeylegessie was fifth in 2:32:15 with the early leader Kiraz eventually finishing sixth in 2:32:52
“I’m very happy to be here for the third time and win for the first” said the 32-year-old Gobena, who was finished third in Istanbul in 2010 and second in 2012.
Her only disappointment was missing out on the course record of 2:27:25, set in 2010 by her compatriot Ashu Kasim Rabo, with race organisers having high hopes that the mark might be improved upon this year.
Hafid Chani, from Morocco, won the men’s competition, finishing the 42-kilometer course in two hours, 11 minutes and 53 seconds, becoming the first athlete from Morocco to win the race in its history. Chani will a $50,000 prize for finishing first.
Oromo athlete Gebo Burka came second after finishing the course in 2:12.23, while Kenya’s Michael Kiprop followed him in a time of 2:12.39.
Burka will receive $25,000, while Kiprop is set to go home with $15,000.
Approximately 25,000 runners from 118 countries registered to compete in today’s races which also included a 15km race and a 10km race.

Intensifying Mass Arrest, Torture, and Killing will Only Inflame Struggle of for Freedom

Statement of Qeerroo Bilisummaa on Continued Arrest and Conviction of Oromo Students from Various Zones of Oromia

It is to be recalled that tens of thousands of Oromo nationals in general and Oromo students in particular have been arrested and severely tortured by the TPLF-led Ethiopian regime over the last few months in connection to a series of Oromo student protests which broke out in large scale and spread out throughout Oromia beginning the month of April, 2014. These protests, organized and led by the National Youth Movement for Freedom and Democracy (aka Qeerroo Bilisummaa), are just one incident in a series of continued struggle of the Oromo nation for freedom, democracy, and justice over the last 23 or so years. Hundreds have been gunned down by live bullets by the so called Agazi troops of the regime in the months of April and May, 2014. In addition to those who have been shot and killed during the protests, many have lost their lives in prison cells unable to stand the brutal torture. Many others have simply disappeared. Qeerroo Bilisummaa believes that those who disappeared have been killed and their bodies hidden – a practice repeatedly perpetrated on the Oromo prisoners by this regime.
On July 7, 2014 Qeerroo Bilisummaa has compiled a list of 61 Oromos killed and 903 others rounded up and thrown into jail during the April/May Oromo student protests of universities, colleges, high schools, middle schools and other educational institutions. Our evidence indicates that all those who have been arrested have undergone through intense interrogation which involved severe and brutal torture. Many have lost their lives due to the severe torture. For example, a 2nd year Computer Science Oromo student of Haromaya University, Aslan (Nuradin) Hasan, was killed as a result of extended torture in prison on June 04, 2014. On the same day a 10th grade student, Dawit Wakjira, was arrested and beaten to death in Anfillo district, Qellem Wollega zone. Again on the same day a young high school teacher, Magarsa Abdissa, was beaten and killed in Gulliso Prison, West Wollega zone. The fact that these three young Oromos are known and reported to have been beaten to death on the same day, from different parts of Oromia, is a testimony that prisons in the empire are not safe places under this regime. It has to be noted that many other killings that occurred in the prison cells remained hidden as it is extremely difficult and risky to compile reports of such brutal killings under tight security machinery of the regime.
Number of Oromos ChargedThe arrests and tortures have continued non-stop. More and more are being arrested before those who are in jail are released or brought to court. Many of those who survived the torture will remain incarcerated, without any charge, until they confess the accusations brought against them. On many other prisoners, concocted charges and false witnesses have been prepared and they are brought to the kangaroo court of the regime to pass a long time sentence on them so as to legitimize their prison term. Everybody who pays close attention to how the judicial system of the regime operates knows for sure that the so called “court” of the regime is just a place where a fictitious drama is performed. Qeerroo Bilisummaa believes no justice is expected from the so called “court” of the current Ethiopian regime at any level.
In this brief statement the data collection team of Qeerroo Bilisummaa has compiled a list of 183 Oromos, from 6 different zones of Oromia, mainly students, on which the regime has finalized its trumped up charges in order to pass a “guilty” verdict on these young innocent Oromo students and others and sentence them to several years of prison. The main content of the charges brought against them is “having connection with the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF)” and “participating on the public protest against the government”. These Oromo students and other Oromo individuals are in addition to several hundreds of prisoners Qeerroo has reported in the last few months and our reports indicate that they are going under severe torture and they are denied food, health care, closing and basic needs to sustain their lives.
Qeerroo Bilisummaa strongly demands that the Ethiopian regime drop all charges against these Oromo nationals and tens of thousands others and release them immediately and unconditionally. We would like to reiterate that we the Oromo youth Qeerroo will not sit and be silent when part of our body is bleeding. The Ethiopian regime should realize that intensifying arrest, torture and killing will only inflame the struggle of the Oromo people for their right. More oppression doesn’t lead to submission. It rather breeds more dissenting voices. We are certain that eventually the Oromo and other oppressed nations and nationalities will bring down this criminal regime and justice and freedom will prevail. In Defense of the Latest Amnesty International (AI) report Repression in the Oromia

Dear the Secretary General & the Minsters of the Ethiopian Federal Government:
I am writing this letter to defend the latest Amnesty International (AI) report BECAUSE I AM OROMO’ Sweeping Repression in the Oromia Region of Ethiopia1 from the attacks and mischaracterizations of the Ethiopian government presented on BBC Radio and other media outlets. I believe I am entitled to do this for four reasons.
The first reason is, I was born and raised in Oromia among the followers of the Oromo indigenous religion– Waqefaata. I have witnessed human violations perpetuated by consecutive Ethiopian regimes. During the Haile Selassie regime, I witnessed my family members giving a quarter of their harvests to the Abyssinians and paying taxation without representation in the government. I witnessed many Oromo family members tried not to allow baptizing their children in the Abyssinian Orthodox Church. In the belief that if someone first goes through the Waqefaata ceremony known as Amachisa, the person will remain Waqefaata, my community members developed strategy to take their children through the indigenous ceremony first. Accordingly, in the Amachisa ceremony I got the name Tolera = things are good. After that, they had me baptized because the Oromo people were forced to baptize their children in the Orthodox Church. In the ceremony of baptism they gave me a name Gebre Giyorgis = the slave of George. I leave it to the readers to compare the differences in meaning between the two names.
I heard many stories about many innocent Oromo persons being charged with the crimes they did not commit. In most cases it was to free the Abyssinians from crimes they had committed. There is a case that I well knew- about an Oromo person being penalized for referring to the Supreme Court judge as (አንች=anchi) ‘you’, a term used in Amharic in reference to women,-instead of (እርስዎ=irswo) ‘you’ used in reference to the higher officials. The person did not use the term አንች (anchi) to undermine the Supreme Court. The reason was that he did not fully understand the Amharic language. This means that the Oromo people’s cultural rights are regularly violated and such violations are legal. As the UN document clearly states “human rights are indivisible, interrelated and interdependent”; the rights of the Oromo people to social, economic, political and cultural rights are being violated and this is clearly demonstrated in this case of a person being penalized for making a grammar mistake.

Conference on Land Policy in Ethiopia and a statement of oakland Institute


landNovember 13, 2014 (Human Rights Horn of Afrique) —  The Conference on Land Policy in Africa starts today, November 12, 2014, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.  Government officials, representatives from international institutions, aid agencies, and civil society organizations have gathered around the theme “ensuring agricultural development and inclusive growth.”
Given the recent explosion of land grabs across the African continent, this international conference seems pertinent and timely, especially for the millions of smallholder farmers and citizens across the continent. But let’s not allow some key facts to be drowned by the enthusiasm expressed from those attending.
We need to consider the venue and the host country, Ethiopia. The Ethiopian government is not only offering a facility for the conference, but has also played a key role as a member of the Steering Committee for the gathering. The same country is arguably one of the worst offenders when it comes to forced displacement resulting from land grabs.
In recent years, the Ethiopian government has leased over 3 million hectares to corporations for the development of large-scale agricultural plantations and is making available a total of 11.5 million hectares to investors. As widely documented by the Oakland Institute, the land offered to investors is inhabited and used by millions of indigenous peoples in different regions of the country. The Ethiopian government has embarked on a villagization program aiming to resettle some 1.5 million people from this land in order to make room for these agricultural investments. This program is being implemented through forced displacement and massive human right violations.
On November 10, 2014, the Oakland Institute released the latest of its investigative reports on agricultural investment in Ethiopia. Engineering Ethnic Conflict: The Toll of Ethiopia’s Plantation Development on the Suri People documents the dire impact of the current land policy on local people, including the destruction of lives and livelihoods, as well as massacres and violent conflict between local communities (read the Guardian article on the report).
Last week, Amnesty International published an equally troubling report, Because I am Oromo, detailing rape, unlawful killings, torture, and arbitrary arrest of Oromo people for supposed opposition to the government.
The Ethiopian government has systematically silenced all those who oppose and report on these issues within the country, curtailing free speech and creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. Independent civil society organizations have been decimated by the 2009 Civil Society Law as well as by the arrests and repression of independent voices and critics of the government’s actions and policies.
For a land conference to take place in Ethiopia, where millions of hectares of land are being forcibly taken away from local communities, this event makes a farce out of a tragedy – especially given the theme “ensuring agricultural development and inclusive growth.”
The conference includes a session on the issue of pastoralist land-use rights in Ethiopia. The possibility of a constructive dialogue at a conference coordinated and hosted by the Ethiopian government, is impossible given the well evidenced horrific abuses carried out against the pastoralist communities in Ethiopia, the primary targets of land grabbing.
There is no doubt that a critical dialogue on the issue needs to take place. But holding such a meeting under the guidance of and in the backyard of one of the world’s worst offenders of land-based human rights abuses, seriously jeopardizes any well intentioned plan for designing land policies that will ensure true development, recognizing rights of smallholder farmers, the indigenous, and the pastoralists in Africa.

ያለፉ ዝግጅቶችን ሃተታ አንዳንዶች ከአማራ ህዝብ ጥላቻ ጋር አያይዘውታል። ግልጽ መሆን ያለበት ነገር የአማራ ህዝብ በፍጹም! በተኣምር! የኦሮሞ ህዝብ ጠላት ሆኖ አያውቅም። ሊሆንም አይችልም። በአማራው ህዝብ ስም የሚነግዱ ወገኖች የሰሩት ግፍ የነዚያው ወገኖች ሃላፊነት እንጂ የአማራው ህዝብ አይደለም። በአንድ ወቅት አንድ የአማራ ተወላጅ ጓደኛ ነበረኝ። አማራ መሆኑን ያምናል። ኦሮሞ መሆኔን ያከብራል። “ኦሮሞ ነኝ” ስለው የማይናደድ ወይም የማያመው ሰው ነበር። እኔም እንደዚሁ። ወላጆቹ በኦሮሞ ህዝብ ላይ ያደርሱ የነበረውን በደል ያጫውተኝ ነበር። በልጅነቱ በሚሰሩት ስራ ከቤተሰቡ እንደማይስማማም ይነግረኝ ነበር። ከልቡ መሆኑ ደግሞ የበለጠ ጓደኛው እንድሆን አደረገኝ። ዛሬ የየኑሮአችን መንገድ ለይቶን ባንገናኝም ከልቤ ያልጠፋ ደግ ልጅ ነበር። ያለፉ ግፎች በስማቸው ለመጥራት ለምንታገል ሁሉ የአማራ ህዝብ ማለት እንደዚያ ጓደኛዬ ነው።
በአንጻሩ ደግሞ በራፋችን ላይ ቆመው “ኦሮምኛህን ቤትህ ገብተህ አውራ” የሚሉን ደፋሮች ዛሬም አሉ። አንድ ሰው ሊጠራበት የማይፈልገውን ስም “ብትጠራበት ምንድነው?” ብለው የሚከራከሩና ሳይቸግራቸው የሚቸገሩ ደረቆችን ዛሬም እያየን ነው። “ኢትዮጵያውያን ነን።” ይላሉ። “ጥርት ያልኩ አማራ ነኝ!” ይሉ በነበረበት ዘመን በነሱ የሚገረም አልነበረም። ዛሬ እኛ “ኦሮሞ ነን!” ስንል አብዮት ያውጃሉ። ኢትዮጵያ ማለት ለነሱ አማርኛ ብቻ የሚነገርባት፡ የቴዎድሮስና የምኒልክ ጀግንነት የሚሰበክባት፡ የ3000 ዘመናት አፈታሪክ የሚቀነቀንላት ጥንታዊት አገር! ለኛ ግን ኢትዮጵያ ማለት የዛሬ መቶ ከምናምን አመታት በጉልበት የተመሰረተችና ዛሬም ደም ደም የምትሸት፡ በደም በተቦካ አፈር ላይ የተተከለች፡ በጉልበት የታጨቁባት ህዝቦች ዛሬም ድረስ ዜጎቿ መሆን ያልቻሉባት፡ የአንዱ እናትና የሌላው የእንጀራ እናት ነች። በመቃብራችን ላይ የተገነባች! “የፓንዶራ ሳጥን! ተስፋዬ ገ/ዐብ ቁልፉን የነካካው የፓንዶራ ሳጥን!
በአንድ ወቅት በአንዱ የኦሮሚያ ከተማ፡ አንድ ትምህርት ቤት፡ አብረን ተምረን፡ ነገር ግን ተለያይተን ብዙ አመታት ከቆየን የአማራ ልጅ ጋር ተገናኝተን ሰላምታ ተለዋወጥን። ሁለታችንም በየፊናችን የህይወት ወከባ ስለነበረብን መልሰን ለመገናኘት ቀጠሮ ይዘን ተላለፍን። በቀጠሮአችን መሰረት ተገናኝተን ስለ ተለያዩ ጉዳዮች አንስተን ከተጨዋወትን በኋላ ዛሬም ተለያየን። ኋላ ላይ የመገናኘት እድሉ እየሰፋ ሄዶ በየጊዜው እንገናኝ ጀመር። አንድ ቀን ተገናኝተን ስናወራ በጫዋታ መሃል ስለ ፖለቲካ አንስተን ስንቀባጥር ሄደን ሄደን የኢትዮጵያዊነት ብሄራዊ ስሜት ጋ መጣን። ኢትዮጵያዊነት እንደሚያኮራው፡ ለኢትዮጵያዊነት ያለው ብሄራዊ ስሜት ልዩ እንደሆነ በጥሩ አማርኛ ጥሩ አድርጎ ሊያስረዳኝ ሞከረ። አስቀድሜ የማውቀው ቢሆንም በጣም በተለያዩ የአመለካከት አለማት ውስጥ ያለን መሆኑን የበለጠ ተገነዘብኩኝ። ትንሽ ካሰብኩ በኋላ “ታድለሃል!” ስለው የበለጠ ገለጻ ሊያደርግልኝ ተዘጋጀ። ግን አቋረጥኩት። “ይገርምሃል፡ በአመለካከት በጣም በሚራራቁ ጫፎች ላይ ነው ያለነው” ስለው “እንዴት?” አለኝ። “እንደምትለው የኢትዮጵያዊነት ብሄራዊ ስሜት ባንተ ውስጥ ልዩ ነው። እኔ ግን ስለ ኢትዮጵያዊነት የሚሰማኝ ስሜት የለም!” ስለው ፊቱ ተለዋወጠ። በዚያ ቅጽበት ሌላ ሰው የሆንኩ ያህል አትኩሮ ሲመለከተኝ ተመለከትኩት። “ይቅርታ! የማወራው የሚያስደስትህ እንዳልሆነ አስቀድሜ አውቃለሁ። ነገር ግን እውነታውን ከመናገር ውጭ አማራጭ የለኝም። ወደድንም ጠላን ኢትዮጵያ የተባለው አገር ተመስርቷል። ያኮራኛል የምትለው ኢትዮጵያዊነት ግን… ” አንጠልጥዬ ተውኩት። “እና?” አለኝ። “ጨርሻለሁ“ አልኩት። ትንሽ ካሰበ በኋላ ነገሩን ወደ ወያኔ አዞረው። እየተከዘ “አይ ወያኔ!” አለ። “ምነው?” ስለው “ጥሩ አድርጎ ኢትዮጵያዊነትን ውስጣችን ገድሏል” አለኝ። “በወያኔ አታመሃኝ። የምትለው ኢትዮጵያዊነት አልተመሰረተም!” ስለው “ወይኔ! ምንድነው የምታወራው? እየቀለድክ መሆን አለበት!” አለኝ። “ወንድሜ! ምንም ቀልድ የለም። የታሪክ አጋጣሚ ሆኖ ቀድመው የፈረንጅ መሳሪያ የጨበጡ ጀብደኞች የዛሬ መቶ ከምናምን አመታት ገደማ ኢትዮጵያ የተባለችውን አገር በጠመንጃ ፈጥረው መሬቱን ከለሉ። አገራዊ ስሜት ግን በጠመንጃ ሃይል ተከልሎ የሚፈጠር አልነበረም። እንዲያም ሆኖ አገራዊ ስሜት ሊያመጡ ይችሉ የነበሩ ብዙ ተስፋዎች መክነዋል። ዛሬም የህዝቦች ማንነት ካልተከበረ ለዚህች አገር ያስፈራል” ስለው አሁንም ትኩር ብሎ እያየኝ “አንተም እንደ ወያኔዎቹ ነው የምታስበው?” ትንሽ ቆይቶም አከለ። “የኢትዮጵያን የረጅም ዘመናት የመንግስትነት ታሪክ ወደ መቶ አመታት ከሚሸበሽቡት ውስጥ ነህ ማለት ነው?” ሲለኝ ሳቄ መጣ። መልሼ “ወንድሜ! ትክክለኛ ስሜቴን ልንገርህ?” አልኩት። “አንተ የምትለው ኢትዮጵያዊነት ለኔ የዉሃ ጣእም ነው። ውስጤ የለም። ይሄን ደግሞ ከትግሬ ወደ ስልጣን መምጣት ጋር የሚያያይዘው ነገር የለም። ትግሬ ወደ ስልጣን ከመምጣቱ ሩቅ ዘመን በፊት ኦሮሞ ነበርን። ዛሬም ኦሮሞ ነን። ነገም ኦሮሞ እንደሆን እንቀጥላለን። እናም ውስጤ ያለው ኦሮሞነቴ ነው” አልኩት። የበለጠ ያሳቅሁት ግን በሚከተለው አባባሉ ነበር። “ወይኔ! ደግ ትመስለኝ ነበር። ለካ ኦነግ ነህ” አለኝ። አክሎም እንዲህ አለ። “የኦነግን ዘረኛ አመለካከት ታራምዳለህ ማለት ነው።”
በርግጥ አባባሉ “የአንድነት ሃይሎች ነን” ባይ ወገኖች ስለ ኦነግ ያላቸውን ስእል ሳያስታውሰኝ አልቀረም። ገዢ የነበሩ ሃይሎች በህዝቦች ላይ ይፈጽሙ በነበረው በደልና ግፍ የተፈጠረውን ኦነግ ከሌላ ክዋክብት (planet) የመጣ ጭራቅ አስመስለው ባገኙት ሚድያ ሁሉ ሲያብጠለጥሉ መኖራቸውን ሳነብና ሳዳምጥ የኖርኩ በመሆኑ እና ልጁ ደግሞ የነዚያ ወገኖች ጥላቻና ፍራቻ ሰለባ ከመሆኑ አኳያ አባባሉ አልገረመኝም። በአባባሉ እየሳቅሁ “በዚህ አገር በኦሮሞ ህዝብ ላይ ደርሶ የነበረውንና እየደረሰ ያለውን በደል የሚታገል ሁሉ ኦነግ የሚሆን ከሆነ፡ አዎን! ኦነግ ነኝ! ኦነግ የኦሮሞን ህዝብ ችግር የሚረዳ ከሆነ፡ እኔም ኦነግ ነኝ! አላፍርበትም! ስለ ማንነቴ ማንሳት፡ ስለደረሰብኝ በደልና ህመም መናገር ዘረኝነትን ማራመድ ከሆነም ዘረኛ ነኝ። ዘረኝነትን እኮራበታለሁ” ስለው “ጎበዝ ፖለቲከኛ ወቶሃል” ብሎ ካሾፈ በኋላ የተለመደውን የምንሊካውያንን አባባል ሰነዘረ። “ለነገሩ እኔ አልኩ እንጂ ኦነግ የታለ? ፖለቲካው ከስሯል። ደግሞም የኦሮሞን ህዝብ አይወክልም።” አለኝ። እኔን “ኦነግ ነህ” እያለ መልሶ ኦነግ አለመኖሩን ሲነግረኝ ሁለት የሚጣረሱ ሃሳቦችን እየተናገረ መሆኑን ያወቀ አይመስልም ነበር። ምክንያታዊነቱ ሳይሆን ስሜታዊነቱ ጎልቶ ይታይ ነበር። እሱ አለ እንጂ ኦነግ የታለ? በርግጥ የኢትዮጵያ አንድነት አቀንቃኝ ጸሃፊዎችም (በሙሉ ማለት ይቻላል) የሚከተሉት ስሜታቸውን ነው። በመሬት ላይ ያለውን እውነታ ይሸሹታል። ግን እያባረራቸው ነው። እንደጥላ በየሄዱበት ይከተላቸዋል። ሲደነብሩ ቀይ ብእር ያነሳሉ። ወይም ቀዩን ምላሳቸውን ይጠቀማሉ። ቀያይ ቃላትንም ይጽፋሉ ወይንም ይተፋሉ። እነዚያ ቀያይ ብእሮች ወይም ምላሶች ሄደው ሄደው ለዚያ አገር እየበጁ አይደለም።
ያ ጓደኛዬ ያንን ተናግሮኝ ተለየኝ። ከዚያ በላይ ቆሞ ሊከራከረኝ አልፈለገም ወይም አልቻለም። እሱ ከተለየኝ በኋላ የተናገረኝን መልሼ ሳስብ አሁንም ሳቄ መጣ። በርግጥ የዚያን ጓደኛ አባባል ሳስታውስ ከአመታት በኋላ ዛሬም እስቃለሁ። “ደግ ሰው ትመስለኝ ነበር። ለካ ኦነግ ነህ። ለነገሩ እኔ አልኩ እንጂ ኦነግ የታለ? ፖለቲካው ከስሯል። ደግሞም የኦሮሞን ህዝብ አይወክልም።” በርግጥ ኦነግ መኖሩን ለማረጋገጥ ተሰልፎ የጓደኛዬ ቤት በራፍ ድረስ መሄድ ያለበት አይመስለኝም። የኦሮሞ ህዝብም የኦነግን ድጋፍ ለመግለጽ መቶ ሃምሳ ቦታ መሰለፍ ያለበት አይመስለንም። የኦነግ ፖለቲካ የከሰረው ከኦሮሞ ህዝብ ጠላቶች አንጻር ብቻ መሆኑን ጓደኛዬም ሆነ መሪዎቹ ሊያውቁት ይገባል። እነሱ እንደሚሉት የኦሮሞ ህዝብ ኦነግን አይደግፍም እንበል።ኦነግም የኦሮሞን ህዝብ አይወክልም እንበል። ይሄን ማለታቸው አይደንቀንም። የሚደንቀን ግን “የኦሮሞ ህዝብ ባህሉን፡ ማንነቱንና ታሪኩን በጆሯችን መስማት የማንፈልገውን እኛን ነው የሚደግፈው” ከተባልን ግን ስቀንም አናባራም። በርግጥ እነሱ ይሄንንም አይሉም አይባልም። በአንድ ወቅት፡ ቢጨመቅ የኦሮሞ ደም የሚወጣውን አረንጓዴ፡ ብጫ፡ ቀይ የምኒልክ ባንዲራ የለበሱ አማሮች (የትሮይ ፈረሶች) “ኢትዮጵያውያን ኦሮሞች ነን!” ብለው “ማንንም ከመሆኔ በፊት መሆን የምችለው ኦሮሞ ነው!” ባለው ጃዋር መሃመድ ላይ ሰልፍ ወጥተው ነበር።
ይሁንና ከላይ ያነሳሁትን አባባል ተናግሮኝ ለተለዬኝ ጓደኛዬ ሳይለየኝ የሚከተለውን መልስ ባለመስጠቴ በወቅቱ ሳይቆጨኝ አልቀረም። “የህዝቦችን ማንነት ቆፍረው ሊቀብሩ ባይፈልጉ ኖሮ የኢትዮጵያ አንድነት አቀንቃኞች በሙሉ ደጋግ ሰዎች ናቸው”

ክፍል ስድስት
የሚሉሽን በሰማሽ…
በኢትዮጵያም ይሁን ከኢትዮጵያ ውጭ ያሉ የ ”አንዲት ኢትዮጵያ” ብቸኛ ባለቤቶች እነሱ ከለመዱት ሃሳብ ውጭ የጻፈ ወይም የተናገረ ሁሉ ያንን አገር ሊያፈርስ የተነሳ ነው። ኢትዮጵያ የምትኖረው እነሱ ባሉት መንገድ ብቻ ነው። በርግጥ ኢትዮጵያን በአንድ ዘመን በራሳቸው መንገድ ብቻ አኑረዋታል። ያ ብቻ አይደለም። በፈላጭ ቆራጭ አገዛዛቸው ህዝቦችን አኖረውበታል። እንደፈለጉም ኖረውበታል። በአንድ ዘመን የነበረ አመለካከት ከጊዜ ጋር ራሱን ማስተካከል ካልቻለ መለወጡ አይቀርምና የነሱ አገዛዝ ጊዜውን ጠብቆ ተሸኘ። ያ ያለፈው ስረአት ገዳይ እንደነበረና ተመልሶ እንደማይመጣ ሲነገራቸው አብዮት ያውጃሉ። ጀዋር ሞሃመድ ምን ነበር ያደረገው? “ኦሮሞ ነኝ” አለ። የሚሰማውን እውነተኛ ስሜቱን ተናገረ። በቃ አብዮት ታወጀ። ከሚነግረን ኢትዮጵያዊነቱ ጀርባ በረዢሙ ቆሞ የሚያየን አማራነቱን የማናይ እየመሰለው ሊያጃጅለን የፈለገው ጋዜጠኛ አበበ ገላው “ጀዋር የጎሳ ብሄረተኛ ነው። እኔ ኢትዮጵያዊ ብሄረተኛ ነኝ “ ብሎ ሲያሾፍ ሰማን። በርግጥ ለሚለቀስላት ኢትዮጵያ የሚሻለው የሚያስመስለው ወይም የህዝቦችን መብት የሚቃወመው አበበ ገላው ሳይሆን እውነተኛ ማንነቱን የተናገረው ጀዋር መሃመድ ነው ብለን እናምናለን።
ስለ ኢትዮጵያ እውነተኛ ገጽታ ሲነገራቸው ጀዋር ላይ ያውጁት አብዮት የመጀመሪያው እንዳልነበረ ሁሉ የመጨረሻውም አልነበረም። በደራሲ ተስፋዬ ገ/አብ ላይ የታወጀው አብዮታቸው ደግሞ ሰንበትበት ብሏል። የተስፋዬ መነሻው የቡርቃ ዝምታ ነበር። የምኒልክ ወንጀል በ “የቡርቃ ዝምታ” ተነካ!! ቀጥሎም ከትልቁ የፓንዶራ ሳጥን “ጫልቱ እንደ ሄለን” የምትል አጭር ሰበዝ ተመዛ ታየችላቸው። በቃ! ሌላ አብዮት ተቀጣጠለ!! እነ ዳኛ ወልደሚካኤል መሸሻ የአለም አቀፉ ፍርድ ቤት አቃቤ ቢሆኑ ተመኙ። ለምን ሲባል ተስፋዬ ገብረአብን ህዝብን በህዝብ ላይ በማነሳሳት ወንጀል ሊከሱ። በርግጥ እነሱ የአለሙ ፍርድ ቤት ዳኛ አለመሆናቸው በጀን!! ቀልድ!
ከዚህ ቀደም እንዳልኩት የኢትዮጵያን ህልውና እየተፈታተነ ያለው የዚያ ያረጀና ያፈጀ አመለካከት ተሸካሚና ያ ስረአት ተመልሶ እንዲመጣ የሚመኝ እንደዚህ ያለ ህልመኛ መሆኑን አንስቼ ነበር። እኛ ያን ያለፈውን አመለካከታቸውን እንዲተውና ከዘመን ጋር ራሳቸውን እንዲያስተካክሉ ነው። አማራጭ ስለሌላቸው የህዝቦችን መብት እየመረራቸውም እንዲቀበሉ ነው። በርግጥ የጊዜው አቅጣጫ የገባቸው እንደነ ወጣት አቤኔዘር እየነገሯቸው ነው። መስማት ግን የሚችሉ አይደሉም። የዘሬን ከተውኩ ያንዘርዝረኝ ሆኖባቸው ነጋ ጠባ፡ ያንኑን የምኒልክ ህልማቸውን ያመነዥካሉ። ምኒልክ የሰራውን ኢፍትሃዊነት “ኢፍትሃዊነት” ብሎ መጥራት ለነሱ አይዋጥም ብቻ ሳይሆን ራሱም ኢፍትሃዊነት ነው። ያለፈውን የማይተው እነዚህ ወገኖች ያለፈውን እንድንተው ግን ይመክሩናል። አዎን! የምኒልክን ወንጀል ስናነሳባቸው እነሱው ወደፊት ተመልካች ሆነው “በምኒልክ ዘመን የተፈጸመውን ማውራት ዛሬ የሚጠቅመው ነገር የለም። ያለፈውን ትተን ወደፊት እንመልከት” ይሉናል። በቀጥታም ይሁን በተዘዋዋሪ ይህን አባባል ያላነበብንበት ወይም ያላዳመጥንበት የአንድነት አቀንቃኞች ሚድያ የለም። ይህንን ባሉበት አንደበታቸው ወይም ብእራቸው መልሰው ስለ ምኒልክ ጀግንነትና ደግነት ያወሩልናል። የድርጅት ተወካይም ይሁን ግለሰብ ስለዚህ አሳምሮ ሲያወራ ከብዙ ጊዜ በላይ ሰምተናል። ለምሳሌ ያለፉትን ስረአቶች ተመልሰው እንዲመጡ የሚመኘውና በኢትዮጵያ አንድነት ስም የሚምለው የአማራ ብሄረተኛው ታማኝ በየነ ስለምኒልክ ጀግንነት፡ ደግነትና አርቆ አሳቢነት አውርቶ አይጠግብም። “የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ ምኒልክን እምዬ ይላቸዋል” ብሎን ነበር በአንድ ወቅት። እዚህ ጋ ካነሳነው ርእስ ስለሚያስወጣን “ምኒልክን እምዬ’ የሚለው የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ ማነው?” ብለን ታማኝን አንጠይቅም። እሱ የሚለው የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ ማን እንደሆነ እንገነዘባለንና። እነዚህ ሰዎች ምኒልክን አይደለም መውደድ ማምለክ ይችላሉ። በተጨባጭ እየሰሩ ያሉትም ያንኑን ነው። ይሄን በማድረጋቸው አንገረምም። መብታቸው ነው። የምኒልክ ገዳይነት ለነሱ ጀግንነት ነው። ለዚህም አንታዘባቸውም። “ገዳያችሁ ምኒልክን አባታችን በሉት” ስንባል ግን ነገሩ ከማስገረምም በላይ ነው። እኛ ምኒልክን እንደነሱ እንድንወድ ብቻ ሳይሆን ጃግንነቱን ከነሱ ጋር እንድንዘምርና “አባታችን” ብለን እንድንጠራው ከሰበኩን (በርግጥ እየሰበኩም ነው።) ችግር ነው። ታማኝን ጨምሮ በሙሉ ማለት የሚቻል የአማራ ብሄረተኞች ምእራባዊው አትላንቲክ ውቅያኖስ አካባቢ የሚገኘውን ቤርሙዳ /የተባለውን ምስጢራዊ ክልል የሚያውቁትን ያህል ከአንድ ክ/ዘ/ በላይ በግፍ የገዙትን የኦሮሞን ህዝብ አያውቁትም።
በምሰራበት ቦታ “ምኒልክ!” የሚባል የስራ ባልደረባ አለኝ። ሰው ሲገናኝ መቸም የሚሰማውን ይናገራልና አንድ ቀን አንድ ኦሮሞ ጓደኛዬ ይህን የስራ ባልደረባችንን ስም ማን እንደሆነ ካረጋገጠ በኋላ “ይሄን ስም ይዘህ ወደ ሃረርና አርሲ አትውረድ” አለው። በአንድነት ፕሮፓጋንዳ የሚያደነቁሩን ወገኖች ምኒልክ እንኳን የፈጸማቸው ወንጀሎች ትክክለኛነት ማውራትና በኦሮሞ ህዝብ ዘንድ ስሙ ራሱ እንደወንጀል እንደሚታይ አያውቁም። ምኒልክ የገደላቸው ወገኖች መቃብር ላይ ቆመው ስለ ደግነቱና ጀግንነቱ ሊቦተልኩ ይፈልጋሉ። “አረ ይሄ ነውር ነው፡ ምኒልክ አራጃችን እንጂ ጀግናችን ሊሆን አይችልም” ስንላቸው “ምኒልክን በመጥላት የተለከፉ” ይሉናል። እነ ምኒልክን እንዴት አድርገን እንደምንወድ ግን አይነግሩንም። እኛ ኦሮሞች ችግራችንን ከምኒልክም ሆነ ከሌሎች ጨቋኝ ገዢዎች ጋር የማቆራኘት አራራ የለብንም። በሃበሻ ገዢዎች የደረሰብንን አብዛኛውን ረስተነዋል። እነሱው እያነሱ ተቸገርን እንጂ።
ግን እስቲ፡ ስለ ምኒልክ ጀግንነት የሚነግሩንን ታማኝና ጓደኞቹን አንድ ቀላል ጥያቄ እንጠይቃቸው። “ፕሮፌሰር አስራት ወልደየስንና መምህር አሰፋ ማሩን የገደላቸው ማነው?” ብንላቸው፡ እነ ታማኝ፡ አፋቸውን ሞልተው “ይሄማ ምን ጥያቄ አለው? መለስ ዜናዊ ነዋ!” እንደሚሉን ጥርጥር የለውም። “አቶ መለስ ዜናዊ ለፕሮፌሰሩና ለመምህሩ ልጆች ጀግናና አባት መሆን ይችላሉ ወይ?” ብንላቸው ግን የእብድ ጥያቄ የጠየቅናቸው ያህል እንደሚገረሙም አንጠራጠርም። ትክክልም ናቸው። መለስ ዜናዊ ለፕሮፌሰሩና ለመምህሩ ልጆች ጀግናና አባት ሊሆን አይችልም። የአቶቻቸው ገዳይ እንጂ! ይሄን ጥያቄ አንስተን ወደ ምኒልክና ኦሮሞ ህዝብ ብናመጣው ግን የእነ ታማኝ መልስ የሚሆነው ሌላ ነው። ለነሱ መለስ ዜናዊ ገዳይ ነው። ምኒልክ ግን በነሱ አፍ በፍጹም ገዳይ አይሆንም። መለስ ዜናዊ ገዳይ የሚሆንበትንና ምኒልክ የማይሆንበትን ምክንያት ሊነግሩን አይችሉም። የመምህሩንና የፕሮፌሰሩን ግድያ ብቻ ሳይሆን በዚያ አገር በማንም ላይ የሚፈጸመውን ሰብአዊ ጥሰት ከልባችን እንቃወማለን። ነገር ግን ከላይ ላነሳነው ጥያቄ ከነሱ የምንሰማው የተለመደውን መልሳቸውን ነው። “ምኒልክ እጅና ጡት የቆረጠው ኢትዮጵያን አንድ ለማድረግ ነው።” የሚል ይሆናል። የምኒልክ ወንጀል የነሱ ምክንያት።
በሌላ በኩል እነዚህ ወገኖች በአሁኑ ወቅት የአኖሌን ሃውልት መቆም እየተቃወሙ ነው። ነገር ግን፡ የኦሮሞን እጅና ጡት የቆረጠው የምኒልክ ሃውልት ከኦሮሞ ምድር ይነሳ የሚለውን የኦሮሞ ጥያቄ እንዴት ይመልሱት ይሆን?? የአኖሌ ሃውልት የማያስፈልግ ከሆነ የምኒልክ ሃውልትም የሚያስፈልግበት ስነ አምክንዮ የለም። የሆነ ሆኖ፡ የአኖሌ ሃውልት አማራ ክልል አልተተከለም። በኦሮሞ ምድር ነው። “የኦሮሞ ህዝብ ለሚተክለውም ሆነ ለሚነቅለው ማንኛውውም ነገር የጎረቤቶቹን ፍቃድ አይጠይቅም!” ገዳ ገ/አብ። ለነዚህ ቡድኖች የሚሆን አጥጋቢ መልስ!

Cooperation with the Regime Hostile to the Peoples’ of Ethiopia is Against the Principles of International Law

(A Statement by the Oromo Liberation Front in Support of Report of Amnesty International on Human Rights Violation Against the Oromo People)

In the history of shocking tortures of dictatorial regimes against the peoples ruled under their iron fist, the Ethiopian government cruelty is unparalleled. Since its ascension to power by force in 1991, the Ethiopian government’s records of human rights violations through extraordinary killings, forced disappearances, massive imprisonments, displacements and other means of suppression against the Oromo people is incalculable. The world has repeatedly witnessed that the incumbent regime of Ethiopia is a government that has adopted a policy of ruling by violence, and commit harsh and cruel actions flagrantly.
Although the political objective of the Oromo Liberation Front is primarily to achieve and protect the rights of the Oromo people, it has never remained silent when other oppressed peoples of the Ethiopian empire were attacked by the regime. It has confronted the regime, exposed and denounced its maltreatment and gross human rights abuses. The Oromo Liberation Front has accomplished its duty by repeatedly exposing and denouncing the brutal annihilation committed against the Sidama, Gambela, Ogadenia, Amhara and other peoples and also asked those powers assisting this government to stop and re-evaluate their policies and relations with such government. The Oromo Liberation Front will continue to do so. However, lack of adequate response and action from outside for the cry and appeals of these oppressed peoples fighting for democracy and liberty has encouraged the TPLF Government to continue its brutal actions against these peoples and still it has intensified state terrorism.
It is to be recalled that on October 28, 2014 the international human rights organization, Amnesty International, exposed and released a report on a gross human rights violations specifically focusing on the Oromo that has been committed by the TPLF government. The Oromo Liberation Front would like to thank Amnesty International in general, and the head of this report Mrs. Claire Beston in particular, for releasing this genuine and detailed report.
The Oromo Liberation Front understands that the investigation and compiling of this gross human rights violations has been conducted under difficult circumstances where the government of Ethiopia never allows such inquiry. Because of this, though Amnesty International has worked hard under such difficult situation and revealed the suffering of the Oromo people, the Oromo Liberation Front would like to inform the international public that the gross human rights violations committed by TPLF government against the Oromo people is by far larger, wide and shocking in scope than the report of Amnesty International.
Nowadays, no one knows how many prison cells exist in the empire state of Ethiopia. However, even if the places and the number of the prisons are not exactly known, the peoples in Ethiopia know very well that there are a number of secret prison cells in different parts of the country. In particular, members of the Oromo nationals who are suspected having link with the Oromo Liberation Front have been detained in prison cells outside Oromia so as to distance them from their relatives. Most of these Oromo nationals are detained in the region of TPLF, Tigray, and mistreated by TPLF loyalists who are purely Tigrayans.
In addition to mass killings, the TPLF government torture the Oromos psychologically, mutilate men’s sex organs, extract their teeth, rape Oromo girls and women, detain the Oromos in extremely hot and cold rooms, shower boiled and cold water on their body. They shoot and kill one Oromo in front of the other, and commit so many other types of torture in order to force the Oromo to refrain from demanding and exercising their rights. Arbitrary killings, mass detention and eviction of the oppressed peoples in general, and the Oromo in particular, from their ancestral land are the crimes against humanity that are blatantly committed and known to everyone.
These crimes have been committed for the last 23 years in front of the Western and Eastern diplomats, the African diplomats, and regional and international human rights organizations. It is sad that when all these gross human rights violations are committed in front of them, including the DAG and African Union (AU) – all of them remained silent. When such International entities are silent on such criminal acts, the peoples in Ethiopia are forced to raise questions, such as what are the meanings of good governance, democracy, and human rights that these institutions and organizations are talking about.
Consequently, based on the existing reality, the Oromo Liberation Front would like to pass the following messages:
1. Advocates of all human rights have a moral responsibility to thoroughly investigate and work on exposing and reporting the ongoing brutal actions by the Ethiopian government;
2. The diplomatic communities of different countries, including African diplomats, should not be silent on the brutal actions committed against the oppressed peoples of Ethiopia in general, and the most targeted Oromo people in particular. They should expose and put pressure on the TPF government to stop its inhuman actions;
3. Above all the African Union(AU) and DAG should stop their attempt to conceal the reality of the Oromo people, and they should work on stopping the inhuman actions of the TPLF regime;
4. The Oromo Liberation Front also calls on local and international media to assess the injustice that the TPLF government commit against the oppressed peoples of the empire state of Ethiopia and disclose it to the international public;
5. There are no peoples unaffected under the brutal and hostile regime of Ethiopia. All the peoples have faced their children detained, their properties confiscated and displaced from their ancestral land. Therefore, the Oromo Liberation Front would like to remind the oppressed peoples in Ethiopia that the only means to remove the dictatorial rule of the TPLF is a concerted action. The success of the Oromo liberation struggle paves way for the success of all other peoples; hence, the Oromo Liberation Front calls for other peoples in Ethiopia to cooperate with the Oromo people to remove this brutal regime of the TPLF;
6. The Oromo people: you are the prime victim, and you know more than anybody else that the Ethiopian government categorized you as its main enemy. Although others understand that great majority of you have been impoverished and subjected to harsh rule during the whole reign of the TPLF government, it is only if you step up the struggle for your rights that others extend their hand. Therefore, you should understand that there is no other way than intensifying your struggle, and we call for strengthening your resolve and unity for the struggle. You should understand that there is no alien who will willingly lose its advantage to protect your rights;
7. In addition, the Oromo Liberation Front calls on the Oromos in the Diaspora, to energetically appeal to different governments, human rights organizations, donors and organizations based on Amnesty International report and expose that the Oromo people are suffering under the TPLF regime and deserve attention to end this agony.
